A passionate and athletic sort who enjoys keeping a healthy lifestyle, David Kamau Kimani came to Limkokwing University to pursue his Master of Arts in International Contemporary Art and Design Practice.
During his free time, he also enjoys playing golf, football, and rugby. While in class, he focuses his attention towards his creative talents.
Representing the Best
During his studies at Limkokwing University, he was selected to represent his country as a Student Ambassador.
“You learn to conduct yourself because at the end of the day, they see you as a representative of your country.”
At the same time, it exposed him to a lot of people. He learned to develop his communication skills with other students from African countries as well as from Asia and the Middle East.
Most Valuable Player
He became a key figure in the University’s sports activities and inter-campus competitions.
“We had various athletics, football, and rugby activities hosted by the African High Commissioner,” he said. “We competed in football and rugby and I was given the MVP award for my effort.”
Together with other students, they took part in a sports event in 2011 whereby the University competed with six other institutions.
“Our team won in rugby, football, and athletics,” he said while adding that he managed to earn a group medal for the athletics and baton run. He also managed to win first place in the 100 metre run.
Developing Ideas
While in class, he focuses his attention to developing his creative skills.
During his foundation years, he concentrated mostly on arts and crafts before moving on to sketching projects. Eventually, he began to explore more of his digital creativity through illustration and photography.
With his talents recognised, he started to become more involved in various cultural shows, campus festivals, student events, and marketing activities.
Multicultural Advantage
“Basically, when I am involved with a brand or a project, I make sure that it is not only me who is satisfied but the consumers as well,” he said. “It can be a brand, a logo, or a package, so I make sure that my creative input attracts a lot of people.”
Due to the University’s multicultural environment, he was able to understand people from different countries which gave him the opportunity to enhance his creative potential.
“Here, we are exposed to many cultures,” he said. “So I try to blend in as much as possible.”
“We were able to develop our creativity and share our ideas,” he said while adding that it enabled him to develop plans for the presentation and work as a team player.
“This creates a mentality that does not focus on individuality but more towards a group of people,” he said. “Therefore, when you come up with an idea, it is not only for you but for the majority.”
Advice to Students
His advice to students is to always keep an open mind while holding on to their principles.
“You will need to follow specific standards,” he said. “People will want to remember you and how you want to live your life so you cannot depend on anybody but yourself.”
