I loved Malaysia from day one. Everything just seemed to click right for everything I was doing or involved in.

Big Man on Campus

Written by Sharina Ros Kamal

Donned in black, Alexander Sin can be seen walking around the campus with long and hurried paces. As the Associate Director of International Development, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Alex always finds himself occupied and busy with a hundred things waiting to be settled. Sharina Ros Kamal tells his story.

Whenever Alexander Sin, or Alex as he is known to his friends, finds time left after dedicating it to work, he spends it in the gym or the kitchen as keeping fit is important to him. Apart from that, his time is pretty much used to focus on his career.

“I had to spend months abroad and in 2007 I only spent four months in Kuala Lumpur,” said Alex, who described Limkokwing University as the hottest campus for the hottest careers. Limkokwing University, according to Alex, has given him the right footing and the right learning platform for any and all students.

Graduating in 2003 and majoring in Advertising and Journalism, Alex received two awards during his time on the campus: the Young Achievers Award in 2001 and prior to that, the Publicist Mauritius 2001 in which he was nominated for the best radio commercial in the National Anti-Smoking Campaign.

Alex decided to pursue his career at his alma mater immediately after his graduation, having experienced for himself the changes that the place can bring while studying here. “Limkokwing University opened up the world for me. Before that, I was quite a reserved person,” says Alex.

Always wanting to be creative, his current job is a constant opportunity for him to flaunt his imaginative side, allowing him to use his talents on a variety of platforms. Not only is he allowed to be creative in one narrow field, but he is encouraged to spread his abilities to all other aspects of work, as Limkokwing University allowed him to be the man he wants to be.

To date, Limkokwing University has a global student population of 30,000, coming from countries from every continent of the globe – Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa – we’ve never been any bigger, and we won’t stop growing anytime soon.

Alex added, although the university is an educational institution, it is unique in the sense that it is also an integrated business hub. As an employee, he deals with everything ranging from events to advertising, video editing, sound production and many more.

Suffice to say, he has a lot of fun experiencing and gaining knowledge.

The expansion of the university is something Alex is extremely proud of. Within two years, the university grew to an astonishing 12 campuses in eight countries, and according to Alex, although the university had foreseen some expansion, the scale of its growth in current years had been beyond expectations.

“To date, Limkokwing University has a global student population of 40,000, coming from countries from every continent of the globe – Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa – we’ve never been any bigger, and we won’t stop growing anytime soon,” said Alex. For Alex, the radical expansion of the university is his biggest personal achievement.

I’d want one day to win an award as part of an international agency or perhaps even to be the most successful advertising person.

His greatest challenges lie in meeting the expectations of his boss, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato Dr. Lim Kok Wing, an inspiring visionary with high expectations of his employees, his university, his country and himself. His leadership and his ambitions can sometimes appear demanding to many, but Alex admits that despite the stress of those situations, each of them have trained him to be confident and decisive.

2009 marks the sixth year of his service for the university ever since he graduated, and he does not expect to switch lanes just yet. His hopes, as always, remain just as high.

“I’d want one day to win an award as part of an international agency or perhaps even to be the most successful advertising person,” muses Alex. Alex’s future plans are also well entwined into the education industry.

Not content with complacency, Alex is planning to take up a Master’s Degree in the future. Although he reckons that getting his mind back into the frame of studying after taking a five-year break to work may not be easily, Alex is still determined to pursue it as continuous education is crucial to survival in the professional sector.

Born in Mauritius, the multi-racial environment in Malaysia is not alien to him for the heavenly island is really no different from Malaysia itself. “I loved Malaysia from day one. Everything just seemed to click right for everything I was doing or involved in, “said Alex who also admitted that there are plenty of opportunities in Malaysia, waiting to be grabbed. Smiling happily, it is obvious that this man does not only love Malaysia, but is in love with his job too.
