Students from the Faculty of Design and Innovation were awarded prizes for the CIPA Limkokwing Design Challenge at the Gaborone campus on 17 November 2017.
The competition required Graphic Design students under Limkokwing University’s Target 20,000 programme to design logos for Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA)’s Corporate Registers Forum (CRF) and its Annual Report Cover. The logos were selected based on their incorporation of Botswana’s colours and a basket weaving display which symbolizes that all CRF members have been woven together to achieve a common goal.
Present at the award ceremony were CIPA’s Director of Compliance Awareness & Client Services, Ms. Ntesang Sebetso; CIPA Registrar General, Mr. Conductor Paul Masena; Limkokwing staff and students.
Giving her review of the students’ work, Ms. Sebetso said, “We felt the logo was outstandingly original and interpreted exactly what we looked for. As such, after consultations with our involved stakeholders and other designers, CIPA decided to adopt the logo as it is without any changes.”
The prize winner of the Corporate Registers Forum Logo, Lame Dilotsotlhe, explained how he defied the odds and submitted his design even though his laptop crashed. “To be able to finally submit my design was all through faith and prayer. I pushed hard and suffered without a laptop and my marks dropped. With this P5,000 I am going to reward myself with a nice laptop,” he said.
Lame also thanked his lecturers from the Faculty of Design for their guidance and honest criticism which helped him become an asset of creativity not only to Limkokwing and CIPA, but to Botswana as a whole.
CIPA Annual Report Cover Competition winner Kobedi Motswagae also scooped a prize of P5,000.
Kobedi thanked CIPA for giving Limkokwing University the opportunity to allow its students to take part in such competitions. He also extended his appreciation to the Government of Botswana through the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science & Technology for giving them a shot at acquiring qualifications that would see them making a mark in their industries such as the one they made with CIPA.
Giving his remarks, Mr. Masena advised students that in future competitions, they should use their own pictures on logos as this ensured their logos are copyrighted by CIPA.
He made clear the fact that though the Annual Report Cover Logo had been selected, they had to comply with the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act to change the pictures used in the design as they had been copyrighted.
