Inspidea co-founder shares the secret behind great animation

Malaysia's own Inspidea, which has now grown into a leading 2D animation studio in the region, attracted a large crowd on 27 March 2018 at the Cyberjaya campus.

Inspidea co-founder and Managing Director, Mr. Andrew Ooi spoke about animation trends at an industry talk held in a packed Hall of Fame.

He said technological advancement over recent years has enabled people to consume content more conveniently, from mobile viewing and OTT (Over-The-Top) services.

“With the demand for content growing higher, this also creates a platform for Inspidea to produce more shows than before,” Andrew said.

“In Malaysia, we can see there is a lot of content in terms of animation, for example ‘Upin & Ipin, Ejen Ali and BoBoiBoy have been an instant hit.”

He believes that a good story is the key to great animation, because great storytelling is what engages any audience.

“Animation is a very long process and it takes a lot of patience and most importantly passion to be able to excel in this industry,” he added.

Privileged era

Andrew said during his days as a student, he never had the privilege to be exposed to industry talks.

He believes that Limkokwing’s practice of regularly scheduling industry talks with the its many industry partners is very beneficial to students, whom he urged to use the knowledge gained as a ladder to success.

Andrew was impressed with the achievements of Founder and President, Tan Sri Dato Sri’ Paduka Dr. Limkokwing, and also the University in the field of designing, branding and nation-building.

He advised aspiring students to always believe in their goals, and to master a specific skill, and from there grow exponentially.

Secrets to success

“My secret to success is watching cartoons,” said Andrew in jest, adding that it is crucial to keep up with current trends to be able to meet people’s expectations, and stay relevant in today’s fast-paced world.

A Creative Multimedia student, Bouchra Nadine Menaa said the event was very beneficial and interesting because it wasn’t just a person speaking, but an in-depth session with a person who has done a lot in animation.

“The talk today was so inspiring that it made me believe that one day I can be as successful as Andrew,” said Nadine.
