Limkokwing London's campus recently presented a musical performance called ‘Transformation Dreams’ as part of the FELDA students Global Campus experience.
The students worked for three months to prepare everything including the script, setting, budget list, and more. At the start of the semester, students had the choice of joining one of three teams: the performance team, the media team, and the backstage team, each supervised by a Limkokwing London lecturer. The students took English lessons for two hours each Thursday afternoon and then they started the preparation for the show.
Katie Turner, who has a background in acting, supervised the performance team and taught them acting, pronunciation and writing skills. Members of this team had to write the script of the show and choose the songs. The writing of the script and memorising it really helped the students to improve their English language skills.
Amy Cowperthwaite supervised the media team. They did an excellent job interviewing the teams and producing a ‘making of’ documentary. In this project students used their media skills learned in Cyberjaya and also improved their skills in teamwork, project planning and organisation.
Sam Treasure, with a background in stage costume, supervised the backstage team, which was responsible for creating the setting and costumes that would help the performance team tell their story. Students had to research about ideas and materials and create a budget list. This was a great lesson and training for them.
After many dress practices and a lot of planning and fun, the students were finally ready to perform for the guests and staff, as well as the Director of Education Malaysia, Professor Dr. Anizu Mohd Nor, who kindly flew to London in order to attend the Generasi Global ceremony.
Before the show started, the audience watched the documentary produced by the media team, which showed interviews from teachers as well as the character of the hero, Elisabeth Lasingun, studying Diploma in Tourism Management, and members of the media, performance and backstage teams. It was beautifully made and emotional to watch.
The performance was opened with the hero’s graduation speech and then they showed students in a classroom talking about their dreams. The hero, Melly, fights against her teacher as her dreams are fun and adventures, not related to fame or money. The set and costumes change to an unreal scene where the teacher becomes evil, and the hero and the evil start to argue. Melly then strangely finds herself lost in a room with four doors. As she walks around, she finds two hungry white mice in search of cheese, and two black mice trying to keep the cheese to themselves. Melly helps the white mice get the cheese, but when she asks them for information, they tell her that she must find her own way.
Next, Melly is alone in a magical forest, sad of being lost and alone. Suddenly an old lady comes to her. After asking many questions, the old lady finally tells Melly the story of her life and then walks to a house. Melly knows the house, and after a while she understands that the house is hers, and the old lady is her in the future. Now, finally, she finds her way home. The musical ends with Melly closing the speech from the beginning and with an exciting version of Katy Perry’s ROAR.
The crowd loved it.
The show had seven exciting songs; Respect, One Day, Wings 2 Fly, Party in USA, Listen, Don’t Stop Believing, and ROAR. The audience loved the performance and cheered for the teams several times. The funny scenes made the crowd laugh a lot. The musical was a complete success and will never be forgotten by the students and staff who had the pleasure of being part of this batch of Generasi Global students.
