Limkokwing University students in the Global Campus ended their stay in London with a final presentation of all the projects they did throughout the programme.
The presentation was held at the London Campus on the 17th February, with the Malaysian High Commissioner in London, His Excellency Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi in attendance.
The fifteen students from the Faculty of Multimedia and Creativity (FMC) arrived in London on the on 23 January, and were immediately set to tasks. The group was divided into two teams, and were to set themselves up as a company, electing a leader and defining roles for each member of the company. Then they had to set up and maintain company blogs, detailing their daily activities.
The main project required students to make a 2 to 5 minutes film with either a ‘My London’ theme, which aimed at promoting London through film induced tourism; or ‘Climate Change’ theme, which raised awareness about the causes and impact of climate change. Upon successful presentation and assessment, the students’ films would stand a chance of being submitted to the British Animation Film Festival, London International Animation Festival, and Encounters Film Festival.
Their individual project was themed ‘Two Seconds of My Day’, where everyday the students had to film two seconds of footage at a key point or inspiring moment of their day. The footage was to be edited into a 90 seconds film, and the best three to win awards at Final Presentation day.
Throughout the Global Campus programme, the students attended talks and workshops by top industry names who advised and motivated them on both their current projects and their future endeavours.
They were also given a brief tour of London’s iconic landmarks, such as Buckingham Palace, St James’s Park, Pall Mall, Number 10 Downing Street and many more. They also visited industry leading companies including British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) headquarters, Westgate Broadcasting Service, a live broadcast at Independent Television (ITV) studios, and even an exhibition showcasing famous props from the James Bond movie series.
At the Final Presentation day, the first group to present was Team Underground, whose short animated film ‘Final Mission’ was an insightful warning about the dangers of climate change, encompassing the frozen wastes of the Antarctic, tropical islands, cities, and over-industrialisation.
The second group, called Jubilee, presented a film titled ‘My London’, and aimed at showing each person’s unique view and experience of London. The group had designed characters representing each member of the team.
The judging panel included Mr. Joshua Jones, Chief Strategy Officer of Awards for Training and Higher Education (ATHE), a UK-recognised qualification; Mr. Rob Bye, industrial designer and co-founder of Morrama, which specialises in developing unique ideas in the various design fields; and Mr. Daniel Vidal, director of Wild Webs, Go Wild Films and associate professor at Hult International Business School, and Limkokwing London Campus senior lecturer in Broadcast Media. The panel was chaired by Mr Mehrdad Borna, senior lecturer and Academic Co-ordinator of the London Campus.
After a deliberation by the panel, winners for the individual project were announced: Lieow Yong Qing Steve in 3rd place and Sarah Silk in 2nd place, both studying Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Animation. 1st place went to Mansell Chan Jun Ee, studying Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Multimedia.
For the main project, the award for ‘The Most Heart Warming Production’ was awarded to Jubilee, while ‘The Most Educational Production” went to Team Underground. Team Underground also emerged the overall winner of the group project, and they were presented with individual medals and a group trophy by H. E. Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi.
Each of the students were presented with a Global Campus certificate by H. E. Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Hazizi, and also received ATHE certificate from Mr. Joshua Jones. Students had also previously received many certificates from programmes they attended, including the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate from Into Film UK, in association with the British Film Institute. They also received a Model-Making & Stop-Motion Animation Certificate from Aardman Animations, and a Final Cut Pro Certificate awarded by Apple.
Giving a speech following the awarding ceremony, H. E. Dato Hazizi said he was particularly impressed by the hard work put forth by the students during their four-week stay in London. He went on to applaud Limkokwing University for opening a flagship Malaysian brand in London, saying it has helped to put Malaysia on the map in the UK. He also thanked the University for running “very valuable industry-focused programmes” such as the Global Campus.
Students said their time in London had been an unforgettable experience, because on top of learning from top industry leaders, visiting UK’s most celebrated landmarks and top companies, and receiving a UK recognised qualifications, they have also experienced a culture exchange that has helped them expand their world perspective.
