First batch of PDRM officers complete Strategic Social Media training at Limkokwing University
The first batch of Royal Malaysia Police officers successfully completed the First Level of the Competency in Digital Media training programme at Limkokwing University in Cyberjaya on 23 January 2018.
The training, which began on 16 January, was specifically designed to serve as an introduction to effective social media usage for law enforcement in Malaysia.
Topics covered included Strategic Social Media, Cybercrime & Cyberthreats, Content Generation for Social Media as well as Social Media Policies, with numerous case studies shared and discussed.
Throughout the week-long course, invaluable knowledge and expertise flowed both ways between the trainers and the police officers.
The participants presented their final course project on 22 January, with each group presenting their own Social Media Plan for a Neighbourhood Police Station.
“This Seminar training enhances our knowledge in the social media and how we can find information through social media,” said ASP Thoo Mei Kuan who is an investigator from the Forensic Accounting Investigation unit. “This enables us to research data through websites more effectively.
“We hope that in the future, Limkokwing University will be able to organise more training such as these to focus more on the prevention and detection of crimes.”
Meanwhile, her colleague ASP Zakie Zamani Mohamad Faisal, a Commercial Crimes Department Investigator, said the course helped him learn practical new techniques to collect information to solve cases.
“We also learned the value of social media in crime prevention and information dissemination as well as being able to work closely with the public.”
He said the programme would enable the police force to communicate with the public to gather information more effectively and accurately.
“For example, if we need to look for a suspect, we could work with the public to identify criminals,” he said.
Inspector Kenneth Khana from the Narcotics Division believes the programme opened new possibilities for investigators.
“We get to find more details about a person such as facebook, Instagram and twitter,” he said.
He also said the training enabled the police to formulate new techniques and methods to identify criminal activity.
“People are more into cybercrime and from the training, we can detect the persons that we are searching for,” Inspector Kenneth added.
