Limkokwing University won three international awards for developing a website for the Royal Malaysia Police’s cybercrime awareness online campaign, ‘Be Smart’. The awards were presented to the Royal Malaysia Police on the 10th April on a special event held at the University’s Hall of Fame.
In attendance to receive the awards was Inspector-General of Police YDH Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Khalid bin Abu Bakar, accompanied by other high ranking police officials. The event was also graced by the Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, His Honour Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi and his entourage, who were on an official visit to Malaysia.
Be Smart crime prevention awareness campaign is an endeavour to raise Malaysians’ awareness of cybercrime and the necessary cautions for staying safe online. Limkokwing University collaborated with the police force to develop a comprehensive and educational website for realising that effort.
The website, launched in November 2013, was designed and is continuously maintained by Limkokwing University’s multimedia and creativity unit, Centre for Content Creation (CCC). CCC has won multiple prestigious international awards for various projects it has undertaken over the years, and works with many governments and industry leading companies worldwide.
The website won the ‘Silver Award of Distinction for Cybercrime Website’ under Computer/IT: Software category and ‘Silver Award of Distinction for Cybercrime Website’ under Government category from the Annual Communicator Awards 2014. It also won a ‘Best Information Services Website’ from the Internet Advertising Competition Awards 2014.
The University involved students in developing content for the website, as a way of generating information relevant to the everyday Malaysian internet users. Students were encouraged to research and present various risks related to internet usage, and suggest ways to tackle them.
Inspector-General Tan Sri Khalid applauded the University for involving the students in developing the content, saying that the various points of view from Limkokwing’s international community would help tackle cybercrime from all corners.
“I’m confident the content provided by the students here will be more effective as it goes beyond only a Malaysian point of view,” he said.
Limkokwing University will train Malaysia’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) officers in the maintenance of the website. Through the Limkokwing Foundation of Creative Excellence, the University has also offered CCID 100 full scholarships aimed at improving CCID officers’ social media skills. The first batch is expected to start their studies in August this year.
The event ended with a performance by Limkokwing choir, the International Goodwill Ambassadors singing ‘Be Smart’, a song created by the University’s Sound and Music Faculty for the cybercrime prevention awareness campaign.
