Limkokwing Multimedia students were treated to a film industry talk on 23 April 2018 featuring Hassan Abd. Muthalib, a self-taught artist, designer and filmmaker who has been in the industry for over 50 years.

The talk was jointly organized by Limkokwing University together with one of Malaysia’s biggest eyewear chain stores, Metro Optical Group (MOG).

During the talk, MOG announced its upcoming Short Film Competition, aimed at providing a platform for students to showcase creativity through videos, in support of eye care awareness.

Taking care of your eyes

MOG Marketing Manager, Ms. Yan Kee, opened the session by introducing her company, and spoke about the importance of maintaing proper eye care.

She said that through this Short Film Competition, MOG hopes more members of the public will be educated on the issue.

Yan Kee welcomed the participation of Limkokwing students in the competition, adding that she was expecting strong submissions from them.

The veteran artist

Next, the legendary Hassan took to the stage to share his long and storied personal experience in cinema.

He was a lecturer at Limkokwing from 1999 to 2003, where he mainly taught film related courses, and was selected to be one of the judges in the MOG Short Film Competition.

Among his greatest achievements are official recognition as Father of Malaysian Animation, and Animation Pioneer by Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

A film historian by nature, Hassan said he loved how creative the new generation of filmmakers are when it comes to pitching an idea for a film.

An eye for filmmaking

“When I travel, I see certain things that people don’t see, and that’s what makes a good filmmaker,” said Hassan during the briefing with FMC students at the Branding Gallery.

“Read books, write stories and watch movies with people more intelligent than you are,” he added.

He said that a good movie is made out of an outstanding, simple yet engaging storyline.

The submission deadline for the competition is 20 June 2018, with cash prizes worth up to RM 17,000 to be won!
