Garo Bedros Derbedrossian was an undiscovered artistic soul who came to realise his passion after coming to Limkokwing University to study Bachelor of Arts in Digital Film and Television.
He is a dancer at Limkokwing University’s Magic Dance Club and enjoys photography while incorporating his movements into filming and dancing. Together with his passion for photography, he has participated in several dance competitions and has represented the University in the Malaysian Break Dance scene.
Following His Passion
Garo came to Malaysia based on his friends’ recommendation.
“The University encourages students to express their creativity and nurture their talents,” he said.
He began with a passion for filming and photography. As Garo started his studies, he began to push himself further to challenge himself.
“I started to use that opportunity to shoot events at the campus.”
Eventually, he became deeply involved with the University’s dance and performance crew.
Garo then formed a dance group called DANCERISM CREW which competes in dance battles around the country. Currently, he has participated in more than seven competitions while representing Limkokwing University.
Personal Style
“I am always moving around,” he said. “I am always doing something and never stopping.”
For his performances, he has participated in cultural festival, flash mob performances and other student activities at the University’s plaza.
“The dance style that is more different than the choreography that I do,” he said. “I think the energy comes from the dancing that I do.”
Academics Projects
Garo’s favourite project is a documentary assignment which allowed him to fulfil his two favourite passions.
The project was a dance documentary which was performed by dancers from Japan, Indonesia and Korea.
“They all came to one place,” he said. “What we did was we recorded people from all around and asked them to share their experience about what it was like to be in Malaysia.”
“We interviewed a lot of people and got their opinion,” he added while mentioning that he was proud of the good results for his video documentary compilation.
Garo explained that being around people who loved what they are doing gave him more inspiration.
This assignment also gave him the opportunity to meet other professional performers while building his global network with students from other countries.
Developing Communication Skills
Garo’s experience at Limkokwing University taught him the importance of communication in sharing his ideas.
When he first came to the University, he confessed that his interpersonal skills needed more work.
“Coming here was good, because it helped me to build my communication skills,” he said. “I was able to interact with more people after my first semester.”
“Being in class helped to motivate me and made me realise that I can push further than I have already been doing.”
The experience helped him overcome his shyness and share his ideas with students from other cultures.
Reflecting Back
“Here you get respected for your talents and you have a platform to express it,” he said. “You are exposed to different companies and people to evolve yourself.”
“Looking back, I think I am now more open to new things,” Garo added.
