FMC Students learn from Veteran Animators at Lemon Sky Animation

Thirty seven students from the Faculty of Multimedia Creativity participated in an academic site visit in collaboration with Lemon Sky Animation Sdn Bhd on 20 Sept.

Students from Games Art Development, Games Technology, Games Design and Animation courses gained a greater understanding in game development design while learning to improve their multimedia skills. These include 3D animation, modelling and sculpting through guidance from experienced industry professionals.

Lemon Sky Animation Sdn Bhd is a Malaysian Computer Graphics Animation Production House that focuses on Game Art Production and Computer Graphics animation for international clients. The studio company has worked with various major game producers such as EA, Blizzard, Activision and Microsoft. Their previous works include Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Avatar, James Bond and Bioshock infinite.

During the industry visit, production supervisor Loo Hon. Gene conducted an industry presentation to share his experience and personal insights.

He provided detailed descriptions on how animation studio companies operate and function. Students gained behind-the-scene view at various projects being drafted and finalised. The presentation also focused on establishing workflow process, storyboard presentation as well as creating layout designs to narrate an animated story.

“The game industry is booming with more new studios appearing,” Loo added. “Malaysia has tremendous creative talents and more job opportunities.”

“Attitude and teamwork are highly essential in a creative industry,” he said while adding that the creative market is still at its infant stage with further growth opportunities.

During the industry visit, students also met with Lemon Sky CG artist Lim Boon E, a Limkokwing University alumni who graduated in 2012 and has been working with Lemon Sky since.

“The university has helped me to prepare for the industry,” he said. “While learning the basics programmes such as Maya, and 3D Max, I was able to keep up with the new technologies to be able to perform at work.”

“I was able to catch up really fast and realised my passion is producing games.”

The experience also helped to strengthen students’ understanding of games and animation through the perspective of the industry.

“This visit allows us to experience real world standards to design games,” said Lim Zhi Hao, Bachelor of Arts in Animation student. “We get to see how professionals work and we could learn from them.”

He also said that visit has inspired him to develop new ideas and helped him prepare for his upcoming project.

Limkokwing University’s encourages educational collaboration with various globally recognised animation and multimedia studios. Students benefit from industry experiences and networking opportunities with experienced professionals and industry veterans.
