MIPA in talks with Limkokwing for collaboration on Intellectual Property awareness
Limkokwing University welcomed representatives from the Malaysian Intellectual Property Association (MIPA) to discuss possible collaboration on intellectual property (IP) awareness on 5 April 2019.
Led by MIPA’s President Benjamin Thompson, the representatives were given a full tour of the Presidential Library where they were briefed on the University’s history, achievements, philosophy and ecosystem.
MIPA’s Secretary Norunnuha Nawawi, Treasurer Ravi Rajan and Committee Member Patrick Low were accompanying Mr. Thompson to meet with Limkokwing University Founder President Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Limkokwing.
During the meeting Tan Sri Limkokwing explained that many organisations and students do not have deep enough knowledge of IP’s which leads to them underperforming in terms of innovation and creativity.
One of the key areas that Tan Sri Limkokwing referred to is the lack of education relating to IP’s and whether organisations and students are pursuing the right strategies to correct these issues.
“In some countries, an entirely new approach is being taken, with education starting much earlier than in working life. The time has come to bring more awareness, knowledge and information to a wider audience and Limkokwing University can lend support in educating youngsters,” he said.
He added that Limkokwing University can also provide space for seminar and a learning centre for innovators, entrepreneurs and R&D teams.
“By adapting content to the needs of a specific audience, it becomes much easier for organisations to extend the knowledge of such topics as IP—and, indeed, to benefit both competitively and strategically,” he concluded.
Mr. Thompson agreed with Tan Sri Limkokwing’s suggestion and intends to collaborate with Limkokwing University.
“I find Limkokwing University full of energy, innovation and creativity.
“MIPA and Limkokwing collaboration would be a great way to kick off the start-ups in Malaysia because they need to take advantage of the benefits and protect their IP rights,” he said.
He pointed out that due to the long process for patent protection, high costs and complicated procedures; entrepreneurs are not interested in filing for patents protection.
“However, with our presence in MIPA, it is our duty to facilitate all application processes because many do not know that the actual process is not so complicated,” he said.
Norunnuha stated that MIPA will be celebrating their 30th anniversary and wants Limkokwing University to assist in the process of video production, design and branding by quarter of this year.
“We also intend to hold a logo-creating competition as we have been using the same logo for 30 years. We hope that Limkokwing students can participate in this competition,” she said.
MIPA was registered in December 1989 as an association that represents all registered agents of intellectual property in Malaysia and continues in its efforts to build and enhance IP awareness as well as provide support in all activities and trainings undertaken or conducted by Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).
