Designing luxury bungalows

Kavikumar Kalaimany is an Architectural Designer for Axis Three Design a company that offers a range of architectural, interior and construction services which he owns. He graduated with a degree in architectural science in 2006.
He credits Limkokwing University of Creative Technology for giving him the solid foundation in creativity and innovation. “The University opened my mind to many things, especially in how I perceive the world. It expanded my horizon and that made me a better leader. I really like the multiculturalism of the University,” said Kavikumar who registered with University after being recommended by an architectural firm which endorsed the quality of the architectural courses at Limkokwing University.

“But after I joined Limkokwing University I was inspired to fuse design and construction to produce contemporary designs that are different from the norm,” said Kavikumar who recently completed the design of a Bungalow in Country Heights, Kajang and another Mount Kiara – all in Kuala Lumpur.
“In the industry today, a lot of improvements can be made to produce designs that are different from the rest. More designs such as the Petronas Twin Towers should be created. We need buildings that will place the nation on the world map. Singapore for example, has groups and groups of buildings; it’s like a power house. I feel architectural designers should be more ambitious and willing to take risks,” said Kavikumar who turned down an offer to work for an Architectural Firm in Australia, but aspired to set up his own company and take his ideas to new heights which he successfully did so in December 2008.
Kavikumar describes himself as a friendly, easy going person who loves to talk and make new friends. Most of all he said he loves to acquire information and knowledge whether they are viewpoints or ideas about anything and everything.
Success to him means achieving his goals in life that will finally result in self gratification and satisfaction. Eventually, he said, it will lead the person to happiness. Failure to him is just a challenge, a learning curve that one has to take from time to time. He said without failure there can be no success.
His advice to fresh graduates? “When you join the industry, be prepared and willing to sacrifice your personal life. Even as a student, you may have had lots of sleepless nights to complete assignments. In the real working world it is no different, only more sleepless nights especially days or weeks before a major client presentation.
“You need to be prepared for what is in store for you in the working world. Feel free to explore and try out new things. Don’t let anyone hinder or bring you down. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
“Every project you receive, every design you make, you can’t simply just design. You need to work closely with clients to ensure their satisfaction. Add some personal touches; observe how they live their lives. Through associating with them, communicating with them, learning more about them rather than reading blindly from the brief.

“From there, mould your designs to their likings, characteristics. Just like an artist who expresses his feelings and emotions on a piece of art work, you, too, can design an architectural structure based that truly reflects your client.”
Kavikumar is grateful to his parents because they had never stopped him from doing what he wants. They gave him full trust and the freedom to pursue his interests. He added that his employers and peers widened his perspective on how to view things in this line of work and was always there to guide him in work as well as in his personal life.
