Limkokwing University is set to open a campus in Uganda in 2019 after officially taking over the premises of the former Namataba Technical Institute (NTI) campus in Mukono District, Uganda, on 4 December 2018.
The NTI complex was handed over to Senior Vice President of Limkokwing University, Dato’ Gail Phung, by Uganda’s Minister of State for Higher Education, Dr John Chrysestom Muyingo who was representing the Minister of Education, Hon. Janet Museveni.
Also in attendance at the ceremony was Second Deputy Prime Minister, Rt Hon Dr. Ali Kirunda Kivejinja, who had visited Cyberjaya on 20 July 2018 to invite Limkokwing University to take part in Uganda’s transformational agenda.
This was after Limkokwing and the Ugandan Ministry of Education signed a memorandum of understanding in early 2018 to establish a campus in Uganda.
Dato’ Gail said the new campus will see students from Uganda and the East African region acquire international degrees and certificates that will enable them compete for jobs worldwide.
“We are set to offer industrial courses which are relevant to Uganda’s economy with high digital technology and with this partnership, we are going to empower the youth of Uganda,” she said.
Achieving Vision 2020
“We are optimistic that this university will bring its international expertise as a contribution towards the development of high technology and innovative training programmes to drive us towards our Vision 2020,” said Dr Muyingo in a speech he read out on behalf of the Education Minister and First Lady.
“As government, we attach great importance to the teaching of practical skills and we therefore agreed to collaborate with this university in a public-private-partnership to increase the opportunities of Uganda in gaining access to Limkokwing TVET-oriented courses without having to leave Uganda.”
Over the past two decades, Limkokwing has built up a track record of prioritising equal education for all and for continuously delivering industry-relevant programmes.
The University has achieved this by successfully integrating theoretical elements of academic education with practical learning of the industry, which is dubs Indusity.
According to Dato’ Gail, the University consistently produced the most effective global graduates over the past two decades, many of whom are now playing crucial roles in many different industries.
“Limkokwing is able to consistently achieve this in all the countries that it operates it due to the University’s strong industry partnerships with top brands across the globe,” said Dato’ Gail.
To achieve its vision in education, Uganda plans to accelerate government reforms in the education system and Limkokwing was invited to assist with developing globally-competitive human resource with skills relevant to the development paradigm.
