Sri Lanka’s Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training Visits Limkokwing University
The Minister of Skills Development and Vocational Training of Sri Lanka, Honourable Mahinda Samarasinghe, visited Limkokwing University on 11 May 2017.
Hon. Samarasinghe is also the current Sri Lanka Freedom Party chief organiser for the Panadura Electorate in Kalutara District and co-chairs the Permanent Standing Committee on Human Rights in Sri Lanka. He has represented Sri Lanka at the International Labour Organisation, World Health Organisation, International Telecommunication Union and the World Meteorological Organisation.
In 1986 and 1987, while working at the Sri Lanka Mission in Geneva, Hon. Samarasinghe represented Sri Lanka at almost all of the Governing Body meetings of the International Labour Organisation. At the end of the International Labour Conference in 1987, his draft resolution on ‘Workers Housing’ was adopted.
After the campus tour and meeting Founder and President of Limkokwing University Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Lim Kok Wing, Hon. Samarasinghe said the University is truly international and its level of education is of a high standard.
“Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing is an exceptional man and a visionary who has built the University from scratch to what it is today. He shows a very strong commitment to excellence in education, humanitarian approach whereby he wants to make this high level of education available not only in Malaysia, but also to youth from all over the world.”
Due to Limkokwing University’s commitment to globalise education, the University took a step further and announced plans to opening a National Innovation Centre in Sri Lanka to develop skill-based programmes for creative industries. The centre will host 15 new disciplines in multimedia creativity and interior architecture.
“This is an excellent initiative by the University, because Sri Lanka has identified innovation as one of its main targets to leapfrog to be more competitive and to disseminate the type of skills that are needed for young people not only to work in Sri Lanka, but to make an informed decision as to whether they want to be working in any part of the world.”
“The Innovation Centre is going to be a groundbreaking initiative. We are hopeful to implement it in September this year and we are looking forward to working closely with Limkokwing University,” Hon. Samarasinghe concluded.
