I met many students from all over the world at the University. Everyone was friendly. I had many friends from other courses; we mingled a lot, whether we were from architecture, design, communications, we were all friends.
James Ly Toong Kwok says his years at Limkokwing University were the best times of his life.
“I met many students from all over the world at the University. Everyone was friendly. I had many friends from other courses; we mingled a lot, whether we were from architecture, design, communications, we were all friends.
“There was creativity everywhere. We were always generating new ideas, integrating them with our cultures and values,” he said.
With an Advanced Diploma in Multimedia from the University, James decided to further his studies in Australia, where his animation video qualified for screening at the Australia Centre for Moving Image in 2005. His masterpiece, a 2-minute animation motion graphic piece revolving around football, was titled Il Fantasia’.
The following year, James joined 8TV as an assistant producer. He liaised with clients, planned production scheduling, choreographed and planned shoots, did offline editing and assisted the editors.
In 2007, he worked on reality TV series Radhi Study Go. “It was a most memorable time in my career. The series covers the life of a local artist Radhi from OAG where he is taken back to college. It was fun and the experience gained was priceless,” he said of the 10-month project.
James moved to QtelMedia Sdn Bhd in 2008, wanting a new challenge. The company specialises in creating opportunities out of the current trends in live television, live events and video clips on mobile devices.
Supporting over 800 handsets with QtelMedia technology solutions, the company also provides content and other technologies to mobile operators, content providers and strategic partners.

He takes charge of the pre-editing, censorship, quality checks, content acquirement, and reviews television series from Indonesia SCTV such as reality shows, which can be streamed to their handsets. QtelMedia also covers three football teams; Liverpool, Barcelona and Arsenal, offering related services to DiGi and Maxis users.
He advised those interested in multimedia content editing to “be prepared for anything … last minute changes, working odd hours and the unexpected”.

“The greatest challenge I faced in the industry was the odd working hours. It was tough at the beginning but I got used to it,” said James. QtelMedia offers 24-hour service, and so James has to work on one of 3 shifts.
He plans to pursue a career in 3D animation and produce his own adventure 3D animation cartoon series in five years time. He is inspired by Pixar animators and would like to create his animation of that standard.
Born and bred in KL, 24-year-old James plays football and futsal, sketches (“anything I see”), reads biographies and travels. Wanderlust has taken him to Hong Kong, Thailand, the United States, Australia, Singapore and Bali so far, with Korea next.
