Arvy Harahap: Twitter’s Communications Guru

Arvy Harahap moved to Malaysia on a journey of discovery where he got to embrace his passions, unlock his potential and realise his purpose. One of his biggest achievements is holding the position as Twitter’s Communications Manager for Indonesia and Malaysia.

The company’s mission is to serve public conversation. “It matters to Twitter that people have a free and safe space to talk,” he says. “My part in this company is to ensure that it is maintained across the region through insights, campaign-led activities, and more.”

Arvy studied the International Business programme, a degree that is as vast as it is holistic. His knowledge in areas covering major topics in the business sphere led him to discover his passion for the public relations industry.

“The international business programme gave me all the skills that I need to look into many things in a big picture without forgetting all the small details,” he shares. He obtained knowledge in common business subjects such as finance, marketing, accounting, and got to experience more focused programmes such as law.

“It prepared me to be able to read what’s going on with the world today, how it impacts the region that I lead, and to be able to speak in corporate languages.”

That’s not all. He was also part of the Indonesian student community called the Merah-Putih club, in his third year of study. “Being a part of their PR team helped me to discover my passions in writing and public relations - My love toward the industry goes deeper as I worked for the University’s PR and Communication department.”

Arvy shared some of his favourite projects with us including a campaign in Indonesia to create a book based on Twitter Threads called #TheThreadStory. This was in conjunction with the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in 2021. “This was the first time that we created a book that way and it is pretty exciting with a lot of prominent figures participating.”

He was also involved in the #InternationalWomensDay 2022 campaign alongside various inspiring women in Southeast Asia. The campaign highlighted the voices of various women who managed to #breakthebias in their industries and still #ownit.

Creativity is one of the cornerstones of Twitter. Another exciting project that Arvy participated in was to create a song based on people’s Tweets in Indonesia. “The song was in collaboration with Central Asia Bank and sung by a renowned Indonesian singer, Tulus, its called #BCAdenganTulus.”

While Arvy has a lot to be proud of, one of his most memorable moments include working for the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Jakarta. “I assisted them during various crises as well as creating bilateral and economic relations between Indonesia and Sri Lanka.”
