Limkokwing fashion design students bring their concepts to iStyle

Limkokwing University’s Fashion design team, going by the moniker of Limkokwing Streptococcus are part of the aspiring young designers that are showcasing their talents at this year’s fourth edition of iStyle Fashion Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) competition.

The team is made up of three Fashion Design students consisting of Muhammad Fauzi bin Aminuddin, the team’s designer, Maureen K. Dewi, the team’s stylist, and Noor Dayana Afifah bt Noor Ramli as the team’s publicist.

iStyle Fashion KLIA is a Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) initiative that was created in 2009 as an effort to make KLIA an avenue for Malaysia’s upcoming fashion designers to showcase their talents and create a name for themselves in the fashion industry.

Among the many youngsters who entered the competition, only six teams were selected as finalists. These finalists will go through a series of weekly rounds throughout the month of March. Only the best teams will progress further.

“Its a tough competition, with lots of challenges, but with the help of our lecturers and the support of our university, we are hopeful we will make it through to the grand finale,”

said the team’s publicist, Dayana.

The competition is themed ‘stylish wonderland’, a creative concept that asks designer to tap into their imagination and create unique and trendy designs, following the given sub-themes every week.

In the first heat, the teams were given the sub-theme ‘Travelling Heroes’, and the Limkokwing Streptococcus designed an imaginative superhero costume named ‘Tulius’, inspired by Kratos; a fictional video game character from the ‘God of War’ series, a game franchise that is loosely based on Greek mythology.

For the second heat, the sub-theme was ‘Sugar Rush’, and the teams were required to design kids wear. Again the team took their inspiration from popular characters; the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, and Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They designed colorful and lively children’s clothing by utilizing candy canes prints on their creations.

The team is familiar with fashion designing, as the University constantly enters its students in both local and international fashion competitions. The University also holds fashion shows every Thursday for fashion students to showcase their designs experience having their creations in the runway.

Last year the University launched the Limkokwing Fashion Club; a student designed fashion label, making it the first ever University to have a fashion brand. The glamorous urban-wear fashion label offers ready-to-wear, versatile assortment of trendy clothing and accessories in the University’s signature black.

The grand finale of the competition will be held on the 3rd April at KLIA, with the prize winners walking away with RM2,000 and cash vouchers worth RM2,000. The first runner up will receive RM1,000 and cash vouchers worth RM1,000 and the second runner up will receive RM750 and cash vouchers worth RM750.
