It was a memorable day when the Maldivian Minister of Tourism Honourable Ali Waheed who is also an alumnus of Limkokwing University paid a special visit to the University’s flagship campus on 28 August 2019.

Honourable Ali Waheed graduated with a degree in Mass Communication, class of 2008. It was that same year when he began his political career as the spokesperson of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).  At only 24 years old he became youngest elected parliamentarian in the history of Maldives.

After a five-year term in parliament, Hon. Ali Waheed served as the chairperson of MDP which was the largest political party in the Maldives at the time.

Upon arrival at the University, the Minister and his delegation were treated to an outstanding traditional dance performance before they headed for a campus tour by the Limkokwing’s Senior Management team.

For him, Limkokwing is not just a University he earned his education from, it is also where his thoughts, beliefs, and skills were generated and strengthened.

“Education in Limkokwing University is very cosmopolitan and globalised. Dreaming and believing in your dreams is important but in Limkokwing it is possible, thanks to Tan Sri Limkokwing.”

On his thoughts about Founder and President of Limkokwing University Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Limkokwing’s take on globalising Malaysian education in 3 continents he said, “I believe he is a genius and a mastermind who changed a way of education. What was taught here was totally different, the experience was totally different and we’ve always had the chance to think outside the box and be practical.”

Hon. Waheed acknowledged that the skills he gained from Limkokwing University have prepared him for his current role as a Minister.

Giving his insight on why Limkokwing University is the most fitting to collaborate to play a role in contributing to further increase tourism in Maldives he said, “It is the 47th year of the tourism in Maldives. It is time to change the future of Maldives tourism. I believe that the rich knowledge and experience in Limkokwing University can help us, which is why we’re looking forward for future collaborations.”

Aside from politics he also a passionate for sports particularly football. He became Chairman of New Radiant Sports Club in 2011 for a four-year term. Founded in 1979, the Club is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the history of Maldives. It saw a historical victory when it qualified for the 2013 AFC quarter finals.

“I may never be a minister tomorrow. You’ll never know. But I’m sure I’ll always be a football fan, because it is up to me to make that decision.”
