With dreams as big as the sky and a heart full of ambition, Callie Ann Ho Qing Ying embarked on a journey to pursue her passion for design. Little did she know she would soon be recognised by her peers for her groundbreaking work.

In a world where gender imbalance still plagues the media landscape, it’s imperative to recognise and celebrate the change-makers that strive to make a difference. One such individual is Callie Ann Ho Qing Ying, a Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Professional Design (Visual Communication) graduate from Limkokwing University. She has made her mark by winning the Bronze medal in the Integrated Campaigns category of the prestigious Petronas Kancil Awards 2022.

The Petronas Kancil Awards is Malaysia’s most prominent advertising awards competition. It is part of a more significant festival that pulls people from the creative industry to share their inspiring stories and lessons. It has been on since at least 1978 to attest to the pride in recognising home-grown Malaysian creative excellence in advertising and to underscore further the industry’s endorsement of the highest standards of creativity bestowed on the best work produced by its own peers.

Callie’s journey at Limkokwing University was transformative, allowing her to push the boundaries of her creativity, challenge societal norms, and inspire the next generation. Callie’s “Blumine” project is a testament to her passion for addressing gender imbalance in the media through the powerful symbolism of flowers.

What makes “Blumine’’ exceptional is the campaign’s commitment to creating a space that empowers young people, especially women, to break free from societal stereotypes. By shedding light on how women are portrayed in the media, Callie encourages her audience to question the status quo, dismantle the barriers that hold them back, and embrace their potential. As Calllie’s explained, “Because my project was based on the portrayal of women in media, I created a space that tries to uncover the myths and facts surrounding gender in the media in hopes that it will help younger generations break free from certain stereotypes set by society.”

Callie’s success at the Kancil Awards speaks volumes about the quality of education and support provided by Limkokwing University. The university’s focus on fostering an interactive learning environment has equipped Callie with the skills necessary to bring her vision to life. The university’s creative approach to learning has helped her develop essential design skills and enhanced her ability to collaborate, innovate, and build connections with others. “Limkokwing University’s creative way of learning really helps me build up my ability to cooperate with people regardless of differences in creative ideas. It helps us learn how to mix together our ideas to really build a harmonious work,” she added.

However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Callie faced the difficult task of visualising her ideas and translating them into a format that resonated with her audience. Despite these obstacles, she persevered. Under the guidance of her advisors, Limkokwing University’s lecturers Mohammad Farid Hamidon and Muhammad Amri Zamilul Khir, Callie created various campaign materials that included a horizontal scrolling website, posters, social media posts, and campaign merchandise. Through the campaign, she hopes to communicate her message to the younger generations effectively. “My aim is to encourage them to realise their dreams through female role models that have shaped the world as we know it today.”

Callie’s dedication to using her design talents to address pressing social issues is commendable. Her achievements at the Kancil Awards are a testament to her resilience, creativity, and the potential that lies within the young generation of Malaysian designers. Callie’s educational experience at Limkokwing University has prepared her to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the creative industry, driving meaningful change and inspiring others to do the same. With her win under her belt, Callie is ready to make her mark on the world. “With a Limkokwing University education, I think I can contribute by bringing up a fresh set of ideas and perspectives,” she reflected. “I think I can contribute through learning how to understand people’s thoughts, people’s ideas better and learning to convey that in my design.”

We eagerly anticipate the future accomplishments of this bright young talent and encourage others to follow in her footsteps. Callie Ann Ho Qing Ying’s journey reminds us that with determination, creativity, and the proper support, we can all make a difference in shaping a more equitable world.
