Are you going to the Rainforest World Music Festival? Did you know that Sarawak has a lot more to offer for those with an adventurous spirit?

The Rainforest World Music Festival is an annual three-day event held at the Sarawak Cultural Village near the base of Mount Santubong. It brings together renowned world musicians from all continents and indigenous musicians to perform on the island of Borneo.

The festival also features interactive and educational workshops, ethno-musical lectures, jam sessions, and mini concerts. But once the music stops, there are other fun things to do.

Sarawak Cultural Village

The Sarawak Cultural Village will give you a glimpse of Borneo’s diverse traditional culture in one convenient location. This living museum lets you experience life as a local, and is a perfect introduction for first-time visitors.

Make new friends with members of Sarawak’s ethnically diverse tribes such as the Orang Uli, Iban, Penan, Bidayuh, Melanau and more.

Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

If you are an animal lover, you can watch or volunteer to help at the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre located within the boundaries of the Semenggoh Nature Reserve, which is approximately 24 km away from Kuching city.

The centre is home to semi wild orangutans as well as various other animal species that have been rescued. You will also learn about the importance of nature conservation and how you can play a greater part in helping Mother Nature.

Upside Down House Kuching

Go topsy-turvy at the Upside Down House, Jalan Borneo for some interesting selfies. Catered for the whole family, this house was made for the sole purpose of fun. Parents, children, locals as well as foreign tourists alike can capture memorable moments.

Bring out your inner photographer by snapping hilarious pictures to share with your friends and their families to tell them about your visit in Sarawak.

Street Art Hunting

Hunt for street art by posing in front of various murals hidden throughout Kuching city. Some are easy to find, and some are not. Make your way through India Street while keeping an eye out for unexpected gems.

Challenge your friends and see who can find the most mural art while exploring the city. Earn bragging rights to see who the best urban explorer is.

Specialty Museums

For antiquity buffs, Kuching offers tremendous opportunities to learn about culture and history. Visit the Sarawak Museum, The Brooke Gallery, the Square Tower, Kuching Mosque, and the Cat Museum (yes, there is a museum for cats!).

You can learn more about Sarawak’s rich past when it was known as a British Crown Colony, an occupied Japanese territory, and under the influences of the old Bruneian Empire.

Recreational Activities

If the outdoors is your calling, you won’t be disappointed by the number of activities available to choose from. From kayaking to backpacking, Sarawak will always have something to fill that niche in.

Join your friends for a wildlife expedition into the Kuching Wetlands National Park, hike your way around the Kubah National Park, or relax in the Mulu World Heritage Area. Make sure you make your bookings in advance for the best experience.

Cave and Caverns

Explore mysterious cave paintings around Sarawak’s subterranean parks. Each cave has its own distinctive character and identity, and none are like each other. Take the time to discover their hidden secrets.

Check out the enormous Fairy Cave, the surreal Clear Water cave, the beautiful Wind Cave, and the bat-filled Deer Cave. Keep in mind that Malaysians are rather imaginative when naming caves and results will charmingly vary.

Safety First

The list of fun activities to do in Sarawak is exhaustingly enjoyable and you may stumble upon some wonderful secrets without realising it. Always remember to keep a map with you at all times and use common sense when exploring. Make sure your friends know where you are and avoid traveling alone.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Rainforest World Music Festival and will be held from 14 to 16 July 2017.
