Students celebrated the Festival of Lights during the Uthraa Deepavali Night 2016 at Limkokwing University on 21 October 2016.
Uthraa Deepavali Night was organised by Limkokwing University students to celebrate Deepavali, one of the major festivals of Hindus throughout the world.
It is a five-day celebration that coincides with the new moon of the Hindu calendar symbolising the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
The evening’s festivity was decorated with candles, lanterns and delicacies as well as performances from the Limkokwing University Dance Academy crew members. It included popular Tamil dance routines and music.
The Festival was also graced by the presence of the People’s Progressive Party President Tan Sri Datuk Sri Dr M. Kayveas and Datin Sri Shaila Nair.
“It was an opportunity to promote our culture to the international students,” said student committee member Sri Ram Ganesan, who is studying Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Digital Media. “We introduced the Indian cultural environment to our students which also highlights Malaysia’s diverse multiracial environment.”
He also added that developing cultural awareness would help students understand and appreciate diversity while fostering harmony between different nationalities and beliefs.
Limkokwing University encourages multiculturalism among its students. This promotes networking opportunities and cultural understanding, preparing them for a globalised work environment.
