Venezuela’s culture is deeply influenced by the Caribbean environment. It can be recognised in the country’s buildings, landscapes, art, monuments and history. Venezuela has been shaped by Spanish, African as well as numerous indigenous traditions, making it diverse and complex.
Mixed Ancestry
Due to centuries of migration and mixed marriage, Venezuelans are a multiracial society with lineages stemming from various parts of the world.
The ancestry of modern Venezuelans includes Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Arab, German, and African as well as indigenous people. The term Mestizo is a description of Venezuelans with European, Amerindian and African ancestry who are currently the majority of the population at 51.6%. White Venezuelans are citizens with predominantly European ancestry which forms the second largest ethnic group at 43.6% of the population. Afro-Venezuelans consist of citizens with African heritage that comprised of approximately 3.5% of the population, while Native Americans comprised of 2.5%, and other groups consist of 1.2%.
Hospitability
Venezuelans pride themselves in their country and heritage as well as their ability to provide hospitality. As hosts, they often go out of their way to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable.
Close-Knit Communities
Family is important for Venezuelan social structure and is the basis for stability. The average Venezuelan relies on social network and assistance from their extended family related to finance, work and emotional support.
Extended family members tend to live within close proximity of each other. It is common for people in villages or people living on the same block to be related to one another.
Formalities First
Venezuelans tend to prefer formalities and appreciate correct postures as well as good manners. Address a person by their academic or professional title when meeting for the first time.
A firm handshake with direct eye contact upon greeting another person will also create a positive first impression.
Dress to Impress
Men are recommended to wear dark coloured suits with shirt and conservative ties while women are encouraged to wear stylish dresses and matching shoes.
The best advice is to remember to put on your best clothes. Elegant accessories can play a major role in conducting a business deal and fostering good relationships.
