Singam Karian

Assistant Supervisor, SHAW Communications, 2008

Limkokwing University is a home for educating the people of the world, where one can come and acquire an education without experiencing prejudice or bias. I chose to study at Limkokwing University because I was looking for a university that had a diverse culture and allowed students to express themselves in a unique way.

Of Telephones and Family Values

Written by Christine Chan

Motivated by his love for his family, Limkokwing University alumnus Singam Karian made the leap of migrating from Malaysia to Canada and established himself there. This Malaysian-born, Malaysian-bred, and Malaysian-made achiever is ready to create waves in a different country. Christine Chan reports.

Singam Karian graduated with a Diploma in Software Technology and Multimedia in 2002 from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and joined British American Tobacco (Malaysia) a year later. Not long after that, Singam left the country for Canada and he has been part of the telecommunications industry there ever since.

Singam’s decision to pursue a different life in Canada was a decision rooted in his love for his family. When his family made the migration, Singam followed suit.

This was not the first time that he has shown how important family life is to him. Singam was initially interested in the field of advertising and marketing, but his parents felt that it was not the best line for him and advised him against it.

Unlike many young people who are on the brink of leaving the nest who are more inclined to disagree, Singam felt that there was wisdom in his parents’ words. Venturing into software technology, Singam felt that he had made the right choice five years down the line.

The greatest challenge in my entire career life was the transition to a new country and understanding their new work culture. Moving to a new country and getting the momentum right was a struggle, and I’m glad I pulled through.

His qualifications and abilities earned him a position in Bell Canada as a Data Integration Analyst before shifting to SHAW Communications where he is currently employed as the Assistant Supervisor to his department.

Singam credits Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in helping him arrive at where he is today. “Limkokwing University is a home for educating the people of the world, where one can come and acquire an education without experiencing prejudice or bias.”

“I chose to study at Limkokwing University because I was looking for a university that had a diverse culture and allowed students to express themselves in a unique way. It was an obvious choice for me back in 2000,” Singam said.

He also added that the university reflected an open-mindedness that is very rarely seen, and has taught him the benefits of being tolerant and working or living with people of different cultures and nationalities. Learning how to work and live in a new culture is probably one of the reasons Singam managed to cope and rise above one of the most difficult points in his life.

“The greatest challenge in my entire career life was the transition to a new country and understanding their new work culture. Moving to a new country and getting the momentum right was a struggle, and I’m glad I pulled through.”

Singam’s job at SHAW Communications covers various areas such as exploring new business processes and improvements, providing technical support to various departments, and enhancing partner relations. Explaining his reasons for joining SHAW Communications after working in the Canadian giant Bell, Singam explains that, “The company, which is a small player in the telecommunications industry in Canada, allows me to be part of the ‘game’ and the experience that can be absorbed is immense.”

“My plan is to grow with the company and establish it as one of the leaders in communications in Canada,” he said, adding that he felt that SHAW Communications was a company built on family values.

Singam proved his capabilities in the industry when he worked with various telecommunications companies in Canada to perform testing for the Wireless Number Portability, which is known as Mobile Number Portability in Malaysia. A system that enables a person to change their mobile number from one network to another, Singam was part of the team that implemented the process throughout companies and developed new enhancements for it.

At the time of interview, Singam was working on allocating and acquiring resources for a project recently acquired by SHAW Communications, called the Wireless Spectrum, which will enable the company to compete in the wireless market. The project will further boost SHAW Communication’s goal in becoming the top player in the Canadian market.

Singam Karian’s looks forward to managing his own department in time to come. In addition, he believes that success cannot be measured nor defined but as long one is happy with what he or she wants to accomplish.

Failure on the other hand provides people with an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and overcome it. “One must fall before eventually rising,” Singam states.
