The Limkokwing community celebrated various African cultures and heritage during an event titled ‘Savannah Shakedown’, held at the University’s Hall of Fame on the 10th April.

It was the 2nd in a series of events that would promote different cultures from around the world, following the Courtyard Fiesta Bazaar, an exhibition showcasing various Latin cultures. The series of events are intended to promote cultural understanding among the diverse Limkokwing community, setting stage for the upcoming annual Culture Festival, which is to be held on the 8th May.

Savannah Shakedown was aimed at exposing the University’s international community to various cultures from Africa. Student from eleven African countries (Algeria, Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) showcased their traditional dance, music, attires and presented videos showing common youth activities in their respective countries.

Head of Coordinators Jessica Vasquez said the event was meant to encourage students to learn new cultures different from their own, so as to relate better to their peers.

“Limkokwing has a large community of international students from different backgrounds; so we’d like to create a cultural melting pot made of understanding and unity despite differences”, she said.

The event was attended by many students from Limkokwing and other universities, both African and from other parts of the world. The students said they had learnt a lot about various African cultures, and the event gave them a new perspective of Africa aside from what the media portrays of the continent.
