Limkokwing University’s London campus opened its doors to nine emerging young designers today, in a new initiative to expose them to the London fashion scene.

The event opened with a presentation by 4D philosopher Alec Robertson, who gave a talk on nano-tech fashion. Dynamic nail polish that changes colour and style with a flick of the fingers, and a gown made from swirling gas were two of the radical technologies introduced at his talk.

Of course, Limkokwing Fashion Club was highlight of the event, with dozens of examples of its amazing cutting-edge designs. The emcee of the event, Kirsten Sorenson, wore one students design and with a matching hairstyle by celebrity hair stylist Dar, who has done the hair of the likes of Aishwarya Rai, Jemima Khan, and The inaugural Chancellor of Limkokwing University, Sultanah Pahang Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom DK and also presented a speech, discussing the ways in which hair styling is relevant for fashion designers.

Yeeva Aszjuh, founder of the fashion label Vicca (pronounced ‘vitsa’), showcased her designs on two models as she explained her background in fashion, and how she gets inspiration.
One outfit was made of colourful strips of crisscrossed fabric, and fabric prints suggestive of cable wires, Yeeva’s interpretation of how we are closely linked through social media connections. The other outfit, a futuristic silver suit, was inspired by the chemtrail conspiracy theory, and featured an inner layer of fabric, which protects the user from chemical pollution.

Three Generasi Global students, Nur Hajar Binti Hussain, Muhammad Fadhli Bin Ismail, and Syed Muhamad Aiman Bin Syed Hassan, presented their beautiful handmade designs at the forum. Hajar and Fadhli presented their gorgeous skirt, cape and hat ensemble, which was dyed with turmeric; they spoke about the importance of using natural dyes, and how chemical dyes harm the environment.

Following their presentation, Syed Muhamad showed an entertaining video on up-cycling clothing, and presented a gorgeous up-cycled dress he made. The audience loved their energy and ideas!

Other designers included Arlette Lee, designer of luxurious baby alpaca capes and scarves; Wild Suga, a brand that up-cycles clothing into fresh and beautiful attire; T-Redz, a stylish and innovative handbag brand; Danielle Liane, a cutting edge brand that mixes historical costume and futuristic influences; the colourful and feminine Cristina Ghivnici Womenswear, avant garde menswear brand Gerda Micke, and glamorous hat and fascinator brand Valeria Marquisa Millinery.

One of the hit presentations of the evening was given by fashion photographer and Limkokwing University alumni Raymond Tan, who with his hard work and talent is shooting for well-known fashion brands. Designers listened intently as he divulged important advice they wouldn’t otherwise have heard.

Overall, there was a warm and supportive atmosphere at the forum, and everyone made good connections and learned plenty of tips on how to boost their creation and enhance their brand. The guests and designers really enjoyed networking, and plans were even made for future collaborations.

Riding on the success of the first event, the second London Fashion Forum For Young Designer will be held at Limkokwing London campus on 9th of September 2014.
