Limkokwing University students from the Faculty of Design Innovation recently visited the Siddharthan Care Centre for disabled and orphaned children in Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur.

The purpose of the visit was to promote the spirit of volunteerism among students and provide them with a unique opportunity to make a difference in the community, as well as develop their soft skills.

As part of the learning outcome and main task, students had to apply what they learned in class to create quality illustration works, which were donated and displayed at the centre.

The Founder and President of the Siddharthan Care Centre, Mr. S. K. Manimaran, commended Limkokwing University for reaching out and lending support to the care centre.

“Your support will help us continue providing a home for children of Pusat Jagaan Siddharthan. Through your donations we can provide not just food, clothing and shelter but a quality education so that the children will grow into fine young men and women,” he said.

Meaningful Visit

Limkokwing University Graphic Design lecturer, Simon Wong Say Keet, said the main reason for the visit was to teach students the importance of social activities and how it relates to their disciplines.

For Professional Design student Aimen Nafees Zakaria from Pakistan, the visit was meaningful because it gave her the chance apply what she learned in class, and to teach kids at the orphanage basic art techniques.

On why it is important for students to take part in projects that give back to the community she said, “It is important to get out of our social circles to see the reality and empathize with how other people are living. There are people who need help and are alone, and it’s great for them to actually let know they are not alone.”

Malaysian Naravinthaan Devarajan, who is also studying Professional Design, expressed his appreciation to Limkokwing University for giving students opportunities to take part in activities that help add value to the community.

Founded in 2008, the Pusat Jagaan Siddharthan is a non-profit and non religious care centre that aims to provide vocational training, special education, shelter, food and medication for disabled or orphaned children.
