The Limkokwing Sudanese Students Society held its traditional Henna Graduation Ceremony on 4 November to celebrate and honour all the Sudanese students who will be graduating in December.
It has long been a tradition in Sudan to hold this henna ceremony, whereby graduating students and their family members would gather to celebrate the students’ achievements and wish them luck in their future undertakings.
“The henna is a tradition in Sudan. We put henna to mark special occasions. The henna signifies happiness. When we put on henna, it means we’re happy,” said Mosab Imadeldin Gafar Eljamri, a Bachelor of Architecture student in his final year.
The ceremony started with a welcome address by Altayeb Osman, the President of Limkokwing Sudanese Students Society, congratulating the graduating students. Embassy of Sudan’s Representative Abdul Azeem Aref Mohamed then came on stage to award 30 students with achievement certificates. The event also featured Sudanese songs and dances and were attended by family members of the graduating students.
According to Altayeb Osman, there are currently close to 500 Sudanese students studying in Limkokwing University, making it one of the largest Sudanese student communities in the country.
The Limkokwing Sudanese Students Society is very active; they conduct events on a monthly basis whereby the Sudanese community get together to form a tightly knit bond among themselves. The society is also active in promoting Sudanese culture to the international student community of Limkokwing University.
