Fashion and Lifestyle Creativity students participated in the MODA Samsung Innovation Award Showcase 2016, held at Publika Solaris on 7 Sep.
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Fashion & Retailing student Puteri Zairin binti Zainal became one of the finalists for this year’s MODA competition while Adilya Botabeya, last year’s MODA finalist, also showcased her design.
The Malaysian Official Designers’ Association (MODA) provides students with the opportunity to showcase their designs to the public. The association supports the fashion industry within and outside Malaysia. MODA provides industry links and information database to members while cultivating market development for young designers.
Over 50 local designers showcased their designs during the event which also marked the official formation of the Council of ASEAN Fashion Designers.
Limkokwing University student, Puteri Zairin binti Zainal showcased three garment designs themed ‘Modern, Contemporary and Futuristic.’
These designs emphasised sleek forms with powerful performance. Inspired by the new Samsung GALAXY S7 and GALAXY S7 EDGE, her designs mimic characteristics such as advanced camera features, water resistance and external memory.
“It was incredible to be able to take part in this showcase; I got the chance to showcase my designs and develop networking opportunities with professional designers and industry veterans,” she said. “You can also find new ideas and inspirations by meeting other young designers in order to create new designs.”
She also added that the experience helped her create new design ideas while developing her presentation and communication skills.
For Adilya, the event enabled her to keep track of the current fashion trends and meet other professional designers as well as fashion consultants.
“This event allowed me to see what other designers have made so that I could improve my own designs,” said Adilya Botabayeva.
She previously participated in last year’s MODA exhibition and was a finalist in the Samsung Innovation Award category.
Also attending the showcase was alumni student Nur Irsalina Sulzaily, who received the MODA Samsung Innovative Award 2015.
“It was very interesting for me because I had just graduated,” she said. “I am still a young designer and it is good to be able to see other designs to know the standards and trends now.”
“Wearable is the current trend as people prefer designs that are more convenient and easy to carry,” she added.
Limkokwing University encourages students to compete in fashion shows, exhibitions and public events. This encourages industry exposure and networking opportunities for graduates to gain a competitive edge to succeed in a globalised environment.
