The new generation of mobile applications is providing unparalleled customisation freedom to smart devices everywhere. It could be argued there is a mobile app for anything, and to the enterprising person they can be a means of generating revenue.
One such enterprising person is gaming enthusiast Christopher Khoo Chee Siong, who decided to make something great out of his passion and skills and thus took the plunge into the mobile gaming industry.
He wanted to design a game that was easy to play, with the ability to keep the audience hooked. After tossing around ideas, he came up with the simple concept of ‘Samurai Fury’; a modern arcade style casual game that can be played on the go.
The concept of the game is to chop up wood in a given timeframe, while evading hazards that randomly emerge. It is played by tapping the screen left or right to move the sword. Success unlocks more swords that make playing the game more challenging yet exciting.
Christopher graduated from Limkokwing University in July 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Design. He says studying in Limkokwing, he learnt to explore possibilities and not focus on limitation, thus entering a market he knew little about at the time.
“I learnt not to let what I don’t know limit me from following my dreams. I certainly didn’t have much knowledge in the iOS app industry when I entered the market.”
He says studying in the University was like “taking a world tour while in one place”. His classes had students from all over the world, which helped him learn how to relate to people from different backgrounds better.
“In my class, almost everyone was from a different part of the world; there was always something new to learn each day.”
Christopher plans on starting an app development company in the future, where he will develop both games and service-providing apps which will “make life a little easier”. Though the app industry is still in its infancy in Malaysia, Christopher believes it will take off in the coming years driven by the demand for local apps that Malaysians can relate to.
“Even though the industry is new in Malaysia, I foresee it becoming big because Malaysians want apps that are relevant to them, in their own language.”
He encourages those interested in entering the industry to learn as much as they can about app development and the app market. He says though this industry might seem difficult, especially if the product does not do well in its launch stages, it’s always important to persevere and not let difficulties hinder your dreams.
“Follow your passion, love what you do and the success will follow”, he concludes.
