Avant-Garde Lead and Art Director

Erick Alcala, alumnus of Limkokwing University in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Multimedia (class 2014), is now working as a senior creative lead and art director in Kuala Lumpur.

He took time off from his busy schedule to talk about his career journey, inspiration and tips on being a successful creative director.

“My passion for arts began at a very early stage. Some of my relatives were designers. I always had a keen interest in their art libraries and decided I wanted to have a career along those lines.”

“Inspiration to me is everywhere: books, paintings, but mostly music. Usually the rhythm tends to reveal messages that can become colours and shapes.”

Erick joined Limkokwing University through a full scholarship which he deemed an excellent opportunity to enhance his skills.

“Limkokwing is a place where students have the freedom to decide which career path they want to follow. The lively and colourful ambience on campus makes learning interesting and easy.”

He admitted that the exposure to cultural diversity he got during his studies has widened his point of view on several aspects of life. “This was made possible by the many nationalities on campus and cultural events.”

“The university gave me the chance to practice and acquire new perspectives personally and professionally speaking. The lecturers were fully dedicated to the students, but I guess it is oneself who decides to make the best out of it.”

With more than twenty years of experience in the industry Erick is a senior creative lead and art director who drives the ‘Magic Department’ where big projects from around the world are executed.

His current projects include converting normal props exhibitions into experiences by adding multimedia effects. For example, games and projection mapping.
