Famed Hollywood make-up artist extraordinaire David Willis came to Limkokwing to give students from across faculties an industry talk on 11 March 2019 at the University’s Branding Gallery.

Gaining a deeper insight of the film industry the students learned step by step how to form a character to produce an interesting movie.

“A simple character with the addition of personality is the best and makes more sense,” David Willis said, while painting a vivid picture of the current landscape of the filming industry.

He reminded students that a character without a personality is boring, no matter how good the computer-generated imagery (CGI) or special effects technique used in the film production is.

“Game of Thrones is a good series in putting those characters to life and that’s what they actually do in Hollywood to portray the content provided by the story.”

“Classic example of character design is Frankenstein. This monster was created back in 1940, made from only wax and latex but even if it’s so simple, the character is still used till today.”

He mentioned that there are many ways to create an interesting character such as by looking at someone’s face or looking at Mother Nature.

“Every line in their face is a story, also looking at Mother Nature such as the jungle or animals is a classic way to build characters that have a split personality.

In finalizing his talk David advised students aspiring to be in the film industry to be ready for a fierce competition because the reality of the entertainment industry is not kind, loving and caring but requires perseverance and passion.

“It’s how you handle the situation and flip the negativity. If it doesn’t work out, it okay you always can find next project,” he concluded.
