Limkokwing University hosted the ‘Sustainable Housing Futures Conference – The New Urban Agenda’ on 16 August 2018 which was officiated by the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Dr. Mary Wong Lai Lin.
“The challenges that we face today in affordable housing is so complex, which means there is a need for stakeholders to work together to bring out valuable outcomes,” said Dr. Mary in her keynote address.
She said the reason Limkokwing University was chosen to host the event is due to it’s creative architecture, designed to minimize surrounding environmental impact in the use of materials, energy and development space.
The conference was organised jointly by Asia Pacific CSR Council and Chamber of Socially Responsible Malaysia, and supported by strategic partners Limkokwing University and Max Capital Management Holdings.
Hundreds of Limkokwing students from various faculties participated in the many forums conducted, featuring researchers, policy makers and practitioners who shared their best practices and case studies from a local, regional and international perspective to benefit academic institutions, government departments and private sector organizations.
Collaborating for better living
The lack of decent housing for people in the lower middle income and low income groups is one of the most serious and widespread consequences of poverty in Asian cities.
Rapid rural migration for better paying jobs and better quality of life is stretching government resources to provide decent housing and public services to these groups of people.
One the main topics covered which received a lot of attention was ‘Building a Resilient Sustainable Housing drawing from the EU experience’ by Head of Trade and Economic Relations, Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, Nicolas Dross,
Another highlight of the conference was a panel session on ‘Cities, Neighborhoods and Liveability Transit Oriented Development’ by a group of professionals representing DBKL, Urbanice Malaysia, UM Land Berhad and Thriving Talent.
