Limkokwing University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Communist Youth League of Henan Province Committee on 25 July 2017 for the China-Malaysia Deaf Students Sponsorship Programme.
The signing ceremony was attended by Malaysia Education Deputy Minister YB Senator Datuk Chong Sin Woon, China Embassy Director of Culture Zhang Jie Xin and Limkokwing University Brand Creativity and Talent Development Vice President Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim.
The University is the only Malaysian partner in education field under the Malaysia-China Strategic Alliance in regards to the “One Belt, One Road” initiative. It was also discussed during the Prime Minister’s visit to Beijing, China in May 2017. This initiative aims to strengthen bilateral ties between Malaysia and China.
Limkokwing University received 15 special needs students with hearing impairment from Zhengzhou Institute of Technology China. The students are the first group of students who will take part in a six-month sponsorship programme that enables them to learn the English and Malay sign languages.
“We see this event as a great opportunity for strengthening the educational co-operation between China and Malaysia,” said China Embassy Director of Culture Zhang Jie Xin.
“We hope that through a closer co-operation and combined efforts, we can together write a new history of educational communication between China and Malaysia,” he added.
For the special need students, this project provides them with tremendous opportunity in cultural exposure and academic freedom.
“This is the first time Chinese deaf students were able to travel abroad,” said Yue Xin who is currently pursuing a Diploma in Computer and Technology.
During the six-month programme, the University will provide the students with specialised lecturers and equipment to meet their requirements.
The University is undertaking this project to provide education for hearing-impaired students with financial difficulties.
This project empowers hearing-impaired students to pursue their studies in an international environment that enables them to integrate into a multicultural society and give back to their community and country.
Limkokwing University actively supports students with physical disabilities to receive proper education and provide opportunities to interact with other students through courses of their choices. These students can interact with nationalities from more than 150 countries during their studies in Malaysia.
