Students from three faculties attended the Contemporary Figurative and Expressionism workshop by Lupe Gallo on 24 May 2017.
Lupe Gallo is an Argentinian visual artist, curator and performer whose work has been exhibited in many countries such as Argentina, Denmark, Thailand and Malaysia.
During the workshop, students from the Faculty of Design Innovation, Faculty of Fashion and Lifestyle Creativity, and Faculty of Multimedia Creativity explored fundamentals of abstract expressionism in art, and how it’s applied in Argentina, Malaysia and worldwide.
Students engaged in practical work to test the skills they learned during the workshop. They created artwork by mixing mediums of figurative and expressionist work, and expressed their own view of contemporary art to create new pieces.
Lupe Gallo acknowledged that she knew about Limkokwing University from her friends. “Limkokwing explores and expands creativity, and it breeds highly innovative youths, which is great for Malaysia’s creative industries.”
The students acknowledged that throughout the year they take part in various practical activities with industry professionals to prepare them to work in the industry.
Allen studying Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Fashion Design said, “This workshop was very exciting for me and it is something I did not expect. Fashion is art, but today we learned a different perspective of art, which was very interesting.”
He mentioned that workshops are an important part of the curriculum, because they help students brush up their skills. “We do have basics in art, but with experienced guests coming to teach us, it actually gives us exposure of how things are done in the industry,” Allen concluded.
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Industrial Design student from Pakistan Ali Jauhar said that as a design student he got to explore expressionism in art, and learned how to create eye-catching pieces using different drawing skills.
“This workshop was really interesting to me, because I learned different techniques of painting and got see how other people executed their work, which showed various sets of skills. Some used paint brushes and some painted with their fingers,” said Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Animation student Nourhan from Egypt.
Limkokwing University cultivates the breadth of students’ skills through its hands-on approach to learning. Throughout the year, students engage in workshops and competitions as well as industry talks by professionals, which prepares them for the real world before they graduate.
