About the UN Academic Impact

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) is a global initiative that unites higher education institutions around the world. Established in 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon, it aligns these institutions with the United Nations in furthering the realisation of its purposes and mandate through activities and research. By becoming a UNAI member, each institution is required to complete a minimum of one activity per year in support of UNAI’s ten grounding principles.

The 10 United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Principles

Commitment to the United Nations (UN) Charter

Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing has made it his lifelong mission to address peace and humanitarian concerns around the world. He has been officially recognised as “Malaysia’s Goodwill Ambassador” by the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Office and as “MY Hero” by the Royal Malaysia Police. Forbes Asia also once identified him as one of its “48 Heroes of Philanthropy”. Limkokwing University and its students, following these giant footsteps, have done projects with UN agencies such as United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Human Rights

Regardless of differences, every human being has their own set of rights that they must strive to uphold and maintain at all times: be it right to life of freedom and security, right to humane treatment, right to property, or right to a fair trial. Limkokwing University respects and values these fundamental rights and freedoms. Believing that every voice deserves to be heard and that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and without prejudice, the University has opened its doors to students who come from countries that are affected by war, conflict, or natural disaster. It has also provided support and special consideration to persons with disability.

Educational Opportunity For All

Education should be available and accessible to everyone regardless of gender, race, or religion. Tailoring the education system to accommodate millions of young people who want to go to school should be a primary objective of governments and institutions across the world. In its commitment to provide educational opportunity for all, Limkokwing University has established its presence in three continents worldwide—bringing its unique and innovative brand of education to empower developing communities around the world. It has campuses in Malaysia, Cambodia, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Botswana, and Lesotho.

Higher Education Opportunity For Every Interested Individual

A greater part of the world’s ills can be remedied by a motivated and highly-educated society. As an internationally-recognised higher learning institution that values the creative potential of students, Limkokwing University concurs that higher learning opportunities should be open and available to any interested individual. Hence, it provides subsidy and aid to students who exhibit exceptional performance in academics as well as talent in various fields such as sports and arts. This is to further allow them acquire the skills and knowledge they need to propel themselves into a brighter and peaceful future.

Capacity-Building in Higher Education Systems

Known as the University of Innovation, Transformation, and Digital Innovation, Limkokwing pioneers a truly unconventional approach to learning. It helps students make a seamless transition from classroom to real world by collapsing regular classroom walls and providing students with real industry exposure. It continuously aims to strengthen skills and competencies of people and communities, granting it several recognitions such as the Global Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Model University accreditation award by the United Kingdom’s Accreditation Service for International Colleges (ASIC UK).

Global Citizenship

Recognised as Malaysia’s Most Globalised University, Limkokwing strongly believes in the potential of a globally empowered youth. It endeavours to ignite the imagination of young people and mould them into global citizens who possess a better understanding of the world and its issues. With presence in three continents around the globe, Limkokwing designs an environment that gives students the space to explore and experiment with their creative ideas. Programmes such as the Global University Campus provide students the opportunities to develop their core competencies that will allow them to create a positive impact in the world.

Peace and Conflict Resolution

As the University of Global Peace, Limkokwing condemns all forms of violence. It believes that education is a powerful tool to promote dialogue and cooperation as means to resolve conflicts. To achieve its goals, the University spearheaded several humanitarian projects such as the ‘Global Humanitarian Appeal for Bosnia and Herzegovina’, an initiative to rally support for the rehabilitation of the war-torn country, ‘Plight of the Palestinians’, an awareness and fundraising campaign to support lives in Gaza, and the establishing of the ‘Mahathir Award for Global Peace’ which recognises individuals and organisations for their peace efforts.

Addressing Poverty

Poverty remains to be one of the most pressing issues in developing countries worldwide. But through quality and accessible education, we can unlock more opportunities for people—enabling them to finally dismantle the barriers that keep them from reaching their fullest potentials. In line with this goal, Limkokwing University initiates programmes that provide opportunities to disadvantaged communities such as Generasi Baru which was established to transform the children of FELDA settlers into global and industry-savvy graduates. In 2013, the University’s Student Ambassadors also flew to the Philippines to rebuild a school which was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.

Sustainability

The Earth can exist without humans, but humans cannot exist without it. Hence it has always been crucial to be mindful and responsible of the impact we leave in it during our lifetime. As an advocate of sustainable innovation and development, Limkokwing University encourages its students to get involved in various activities that promote the importance of making sustainable and equitable choices. This includes the Heal The World + SASET programme where students replanted trees in the rainforests of Pahang, and the partnership with Zoo Negara for the launch of the Giant Panda Conservation Centre.

The ‘Unlearning’ of Intolerance

Limkokwing is home to students from over 150 countries. They come from different parts of the globe—a myriad of cultures, beliefs, and traditions—but respect for each other makes them all thrive in a peaceful and harmonious ecosystem. The University hosts the annual Cultural Festival and observes the International Day of Tolerance, both of which encourage inclusion and tolerance. National galas are also celebrated in the campus such as Nowruz, Deepavali, and other cultural showcases. This diverse and multicultural learning environment is the University’s primary leverage in promoting understanding and the ‘unlearning’ of intolerance.
