Limkokwing University conferred Tajikistan President, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership. The conferment ceremony was held at the University’s Cyberjaya campus on the 24th June. It was attended by a Tajikistan delegation, which included Foreign Minister Aslov Sirodjidin, Economic Development and Trade Minister Rahimzoda Sharif, Education and Science Minister Said Nuriddin, Tajikistan senior government officials and businessmen.

Also in attendance was Ambassadors, High Commissioners, officials of Malaysian Ministries, corporate leaders, the University’s industry partners, and the Founder and President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Limkokwing.

The President and his delegation were in Malaysia on a 4 day State visit, the first since Tajikistan received its independence in 1991. The visit was made possible by the office of the Honorary Consul of Tajikistan, Tan Sri Limkokwing, who facilitated discussions with the Malaysian Prime Minister on strengthening bilateral relations.

Tan Sri Limkokwing said the visit was of a special significance, as it will greatly strengthen relations between Malaysia and Tajikistan.

“With this State visit by the President, the bond that binds our two countries together will further strengthen for sure.”

He went on to say the Honorary Doctorate of Leadership conferred upon the President was well deserved, and the University was uttermost elated to be doing the honor.

President Rahmon led Tajikistan from the ruin of civil war to the peaceful and prosperous state the nation is in today. He transformed the country’s economy to a progressive status, and re-engineered the education system to make primary and lower secondary education compulsory and free.

He was instrumental in the establishment of the country’s National Strategy for Education 2020, with the goal of ensuring universal access to higher education for everyone, including people with disabilities. His hard work and contribution to Tajikistan has been recognized in his homeland, as he was named ‘Hero of Tajikistan’ by the nation’s parliament in 1999.

President Emomali Rahmon expressed gratitude towards the University for the honor. He said the award was a recognition of the contribution of the people of Tajikistan as a whole, and also a way of strengthening ties and cooperation between the two countries.

“I acknowledge this high honor as a recognition of a contribution of the people and government of Tajikistan, to strengthen ties of friendship and fruitful cooperation.”

He called upon Tajik students studying in Limkokwing University to use the auspicious opportunities availed to them to gain knowledge and experience. He said they were the future of their country, and by equipping themselves with such skills, they will be better positioned to develop Tajikistan to great lengths.

“You will be the one who will be the future progress and prosperity of your native land.”

He also expressed his happiness on the prospect of establishing a Limkokwing University campus in Tajikistan. He said the campus would give Tajik students a chance to experience a Limkokwing education without having to leave Tajikistan. The campus will also contribute greatly to developing home grown talent and create a myriad pool of skilled manpower with an international education background.

Limkokwing University has been receiving students from Tajikistan since 2009, pursuing a variety of programmes, from language studies to degrees in business, design, architecture, multimedia, communications and tourism. The University was also hosting the Tajikistan Trade forum the same day, held at the Shangri- La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, where Malaysian business representatives discussed relations with representatives from Tajikistan.

Also, during the conferment ceremony, the University announced that it will be offering RM2million worth of 20 scholarships to Tajikistan students.
