A team of four Limkokwing University’s Professional Design students won first place in the Sustainable Seafood festival 2014’s Mascot design competition. The prize giving ceremony was held on the 7th June at The Intermark Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
The competition was part of the ‘Save our Seafood’ campaign, which is part of an ongoing initiative to raise awareness on the global decline of fish stocks and to collaborate with the government, businesses and local communities towards achieving sustainable fishery management.
The Mascot design competition called for students to seek inspiration from a marine themed cause and explore issues surrounding the subject of sustainable seafood in order to come up with a mascot to represent the cause.
The Limkokwing team, named the ‘HAPPY TEAM’ comprised of four students; Nur Hazwani Bt Othman, Wafaa’ Binti Yahya, and Siti Zainura Bt Mohamad Zulkifli, all from Malaysia, and Dayangku Nazurah Binti Haji Ahmad from Brunei.
Their winning mascot was inspired by the Humphead Wrasse, a type of fish mainly found in the Indo Pacific region. The turquoise coloured mascot was decorated with sequined glitter, a touch the group said was in line with their theme of ‘brightening up the world of the sea life’.
“We wanted a lively mascot that could clearly show the beauty of the sea life,” said Nazurah.
She said the group was elated to have won the competition, as it was the first big competition all the members of the group had ever entered.
“We are happy we won, it was our first time participating in such a big competition, and it’s amazing that we won”
She said participation in industry projects such as this one was a good reflection on their resume when they graduate. It also gives them an opportunity to hone their skills to industry expectations.
“Projects like these get us ready for the industry, we learn the expected standards, and participation in this projects gives us a chance to perfect our skills.”
The group’s lecturer and project advisor, Mr. Simon Wong said the students have grown both in confidence and skills as they worked on the project, and he believes they can now easily take on any future projects and succeed.
Limkokwing University practises a hands-on approach to education, which actively encourages students to participate in projects in and outside the University. The University boasts many award winning students in all disciplines, in both local and international projects.
