Students from two faculties won five awards during the Royal Floria, Putrajaya 2016 on 27 May in 2016.
Themed ‘The Magical World of Floria’, the Royal Floria Putrajaya 2016, is organised by Putrajaya Corporation with the support of the Ministry of Federal Territories, Tourism and Culture and Tourism Malaysia.
Royal Floria Putrajaya is an annual flower and garden festival held in Putrajaya. The event included Orchid Competition, Musical Garden, Floral Exhibition and over 300 other activities.
Thirty five students from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Faculty of Design Innovation participated in the Royal Floria Gardens and Wall Art Competition.
Limkokwing University competed against 14 other educational institutions and received ‘Royal Floria Garden Gold Award’, ‘Royal Floria Garden Starlight Silver Award’ as well as ‘Royal Floria Garden Competition Creative Award’ under the University Category.
Other awards include ‘Bronze Award’ for the ‘Time Capsule’ design under the Wall Art Category and ‘Silver Award’ for the Poster Competition.
Students were encouraged to participate in the event to foster teamwork spirits while learning the value of discipline and responsibility.
“I am proud to see that our students from different countries and various programmes working together to achieve a common goal,” said Chong You Leong, Architecture Lecturer after the event.
“They learn to balance their studies and curriculum,” he added. “They are able to lead themselves and manage on their own.
He also explained students learn to expand their networking skills with different parties and establish greater visibility.
“We believe that by focusing on outdoor participation, we can empower our students with more industry exposure,” added Architecture Lecturer Catherine Kong “Students can learn more by being out of the classroom environment.”
“Through this participation, we can nurture their interpersonal skills and leadership potential,” she added.
Catherine explained that outdoor activities enable students to develop professionalism, adaptability and communication skills.
For Siti Sarah Sabrina binti Baharuddin, who is studying Foundation in Built Environment, this exposure gave her an opportunity to learn architecture and design in greater depth.
“It made me realise the importance of taking pride in your ideas and design,” she said. “More importantly, I could learn from mistakes and make improvement and develop myself as a team player.”
“I was able hone my leadership skills and incorporate different ideas to create this design,” she added.
Limkokwing University incorporates industry exposure through participating in exhibitions, competitions and showcases. The University emphasises a learning approach that enables students to gain experience for a completive advantage in a globalised environment.
