Twelve Limkokwing fashion design students got an exclusive opportunity to showcase their designs during “Thread of Heritage, A Truly Malaysian Textiles Exhibition” at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2021 in Pavilion KL recently.

The exhibition was a tribute to Malaysia’s lush versatile textiles and was showcased by Cheminahsayang. The one-of-a-kind collection features a hand-blocked batik design intricately curated by Her Majesty, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah whom the students had the privilege to meet in person during her visit to the exhibition.

Drawing inspiration from the Japanese designer Issey Miyke’s evolutionary philosophy of creating clothing that addresses the demands of the times by combining traditional techniques with cutting edge technologies, our students got the opportunity to practise what they learned in the classroom in a professional setting.

Che Wan Nor Shafiqah, found the Thread of Heritage Exhibition as an unforgettable experience.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity as this is my very first time participating in a fashion event. It’s also my first time draping. I’ve learnt so many new techniques and improved my pleating and designing skills. But the best part was when Dato Tiffanie was there for us applauding our hard work and encouraging us to bring our best,” she said.

Sharveena Maniam, explained how she injected her own style flavour into her design.

“As a fashion designer, I like classy, elegant styles, so for this exhibition I wanted to drape BATIK into a classy, elegant piece. It was challenging because it was my first time draping, but the results were definitely worth it.” she said.

Eka Emyra described how this event was much needed after attending online classes for over a year due to the national lockdown.

“We’re all so excited to be here! It is an amazing experience meeting my classmates in person and working on our designs together. Our lecturers have also been very supportive with us here on this project and during the lockdown” she said.

Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week has also launched KLFW Digital 2021 exclusively on @hurr.tv Youtube Channel showing extravagant designs created by Malaysian designers; were two Limkokwing alumni graduates have participated with their ingenious and vibrant designs.

Filled with creativity, skill and craftsmanship, all designs were under the tutelage of Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim, Vice President of Brand, Creativity and Talent Development of the University.

As an industry driven University, Limkokwing provides students with an unmatched platform to apply skills they learn in class into real life setups. They gain industry relevant skills before they graduate which enables them to transition smoothly to high income careers once they graduate.
