Limkokwing University collaborated with TOMS Malaysia to debut One Day Without Shoes, an initiative to raise awareness on children’s health and education, at the University campus on 21st May.

TOMS is an international shoe and apparel retailer started by Blake Mycoskie, with intentions to help providing shoes for children in need around the world. Through its One for One initiative, the company matches every pair of shoes purchased with a new pair of shoes for a child in need. It also has many charity efforts to help people in need in different aspects of life.

One Day Without Shoes is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness and educating people on the difficulties faced by underprivileged children who cannot afford shoes. This year’s campaign was the 8th worldwide, but held for the first time in Malaysia. It called for people to leave their shoes at home for the day and went through their day barefoot, to experience the hardship disadvantaged children have to face on a daily basis.

Students were invited to participate in various barefoot activities including barefoot walk, barefoot art, barefoot fashion show, and barefoot dance and music performances by their fellow Limkokwing students. The event ended with a barefoot performance by Malaysian rapper Arabyrd.

Architecture Science student from Maldives, Aishath Maisha said events like this incited in students a spirit of altruism among the students, which ultimately contributes to a better world.

“Events like this give me an opportunity to get involved in making the world a better place. Because it involves creativity and innovation, with an entertainment aspect, it is more interesting to the youth.”

TOMS partnered with Limkokwing University because of the University’s diverse environment and the University’s own humanitarian efforts through its Heal the World Foundation, which had raised funds and created awareness for various causes around the world.

TOMS Malaysia’s Creative Director Azrin Omar said Limkokwing University was the ideal choice to debut One Day without Shoes campaign in Malaysia, as Limkokwing students are no stranger to humanitarian campaigns, and also the university’s diverse community would help spread the message worldwide.

“Limkokwing University is already involved in numerous humanitarian activities, and has encouraged students to participate using creative and lively methods to raise awareness for various causes,” he said.

He applauded the University’s efforts in helping the needy, saying it was essential to involve the youth in charity activities, and creativity was one of the best methods.

“It is important for young people to get encouragement to participate in humanitarian initiatives. TOMS Malaysia is proud to debut One Day Without Shoes Campaign in Malaysia through Limkokwing University,” he said.
