Why study Tourism Management?

11 July 2022

COVID-19 has swept the globe at whirlwind speed, causing a halt in the tourism industry. However, despite the large losses that were forecast in the short term, recovery in the sector is inevitable.

Tourism is the largest service sector industry in the world — and it continues to grow.
It is integral to the economic health of all regions: it contributes more than 10 percent of the world’s GDP, and accounts for one in 10 jobs.

International Tourism has proven to be a key source of income in many countries. However, this is not the only positive influence it has brought about in the world. It has helped to promote the national heritage and culture of many countries, and has put lesser known countries on the world map.

Studying a degree in this field means you’ll have the chance to develop the knowledge and skills needed to begin your career with an international outlook. You will be able to provide quality tourist experiences, to develop and manage tourism businesses with entrepreneurial spirit, and to contribute to community development in a way that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

You will also learn key business skills and gain the expertise to develop quality tourist experiences, and the ability to successfully manage local, regional, national and international tourism businesses and organisations.

Through a career in this field, you’ll embrace opportunities to travel and visit new places. It may seem obvious, but it’s also one of the most important reasons to join the industry. And since your experiences will go far beyond the classroom, you’ll get the opportunity to experience course topics firsthand: Travel on student-led tours, intern within the industry, take classes at various locations, and study abroad.

No two days in the industry are the same. This fast-paced, ever-changing field provides the perfect opportunity to unleash your creativity to enhance travellers’ experiences. You’ll find endless opportunities to pursue career paths in areas that range from high-end travel to rugged outdoor adventure, event management and event planning.
