Professor Graham Baldwin, Vice Chancellor of one of UK’s newest university, Southampton Solent University, visited Limkokwing University yesterday to cement ties between the two institutions.

Although Southampton Solent is a new university (it received its university status in 2005), prior to that it has been delivering university education since its establishment in 1856. Currently, Southampton Solent has over 20,000 students and it is based in Southampton, United Kingdom. Southampton Solent University has strong maritime courses but also offers various programmes in the creative and design fields such as advanced technology, journalism, photography, fine art, film, media and cultural studies, law and a broad range of business disciplines.

In the 7 October visit to Limkokwing University, Professor Graham Baldwin was accompanied by Professor Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent.  Professor Graham Baldwin was only recently appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Southampton Solent University, taking over the post vacated by his predecessor at the end of August 2014.

“I’m new to the university in Solent so I want to come and see for myself the works that undertaken here at Limkokwing University and have to say that I’ve had a really enjoyable morning and I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen”, he explained when asked about the purpose of the visit.

Professor Graham Baldwin was also very impressed with the multicultural environment at Limkokwing University where the campus community comprises students from over 165 nations. Professor Baldwin opined that it is important that students become familiar with different culture and people from different background as this would enable them to have a greater understanding of different perspectives.  He added, “I think the opportunity to work in a multicultural environment like that is vitally important”.

“I’ve been very, very impressed with what I’ve seen today and the work that takes place here but clearly it’s translated across many campuses in different parts of the world reaching out to different culture, different backgrounds.  I think it’s fantastic, it’s very much a model that the UK is yet to develop but is looking to develop so I think we got a lot to learn from this, so my summary would be I am very impressed!” said Professor Baldwin more.

The Solent delegation’s visit was hosted by Dato’ Gail Phung, Senior Vice President (Corporate Development) of Limkokwing University, and Professor Cedric D. Bell, Pro Vice Chancellor of Limkokwing University.

The visit started with a tour of Limkokwing University’s facilities, which include the Presidential Library, Limkokwing’s Branding Gallery, the main Library, the Multimedia Lab and other faculty’s facilities. The two parties then sat down to discuss various collaborative opportunities, including the development of a series of future programmes between the two institutions.
