Diploma in Product Design

Faculty of Design Innovation JPT/BPP (R/214/4/0006) 1/16

The Diploma in Product Design is a programme that develops the students' capability in three-dimensional design. We are surrounded by products - from the watch on your wrist, the furniture in your house, to the car you drive. Product design, also known as industrial design, is a subject that allows students to conceptualise and design new consumer products and electronic consumer goods such as handphones, audio and multimedia products. Product Design is dominated by designers who are able to generate new, innovative and creative ideas that can successfully compete internationally.

A product designer gives form and function to a product. He gives a product an identity that can communicate to the customer and provide a specific function. Students will gain an understanding of form and function, colour, market research and consumer demand, new technology as well as material and cultural studies. Students are exposed to a wide range of international projects ranging from electronic consumer products, furniture and lighting, to toy design and packaging. Students will learn to execute projects in a professional manner from presentation sketches, research reports, visuals, computer-generated 3D models and actual prototypes.

Students will also learn the technical side of manufacturing and materials in order to produce practical design. Many of the projects will require working directly with industries to give students a practical exposure to 'live' project and gain the skills and knowledge they need to enter into the global design network.
