Amir Izzat: Cracking the code through computer science

From a unique specialty to an absolute necessity, digitisation has made computer science an integral part of contemporary higher education. It is a field for problem solvers and changemakers, just like alumnus Amir.

Amir graduated from Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Information and Communication Technology programme. It wasn’t long before he landed a job in the Engineering Department as QA Engineer at Setel Ventures (a wholly owned company by PETRONAS). Here, he gained experience in end-to-end testing for manual and automation via Jira Software and is currently involved in automation testing using JavaScript and Java.

Setel is Malaysia’s first mobile application that integrates the e-payment platform with the pump, Kedai Mesra and loyalty benefits to create seamless retail-on-the-go experience for PETRONAS customers. The company’s missions are to fight for the right to delight their customers; to tackle big challenges and create big impact; and to aim high and support each other to bring great ideas to reality.

“I am responsible for delivering the best experience to the customer where we work together for better and great feedback,” Amir shares. Amir recognised passion for his job during his final year project called ‘E-Checking Exam Result System using Telegram Robot.’ “Through the project, I noticed how much I loved streamlining more seamless operations.”

He pursued his passion by applying for an internship at PETRONAS in 2019 and was placed under Setel Ventures. “In 3 months of the internship, I was assigned 3 main job scopes which were Product Management - gathering requirements based on Business Users, Developers and Stakeholders; Quality Assurance - performing and writing end-to-end testing; and Data Analysis - scripted nested SQL queries to extract and compare data between tables based on the requirements.”

Amir is currently working on another project which is an Automated Parking Payment System. This allows customers to park with authorization using Setel’s License Plate Recognition (LPR) without any surcharge. It is a seamless and frictionless system which is now ready to be used in SURIA KLCC.

“Being involved in IT industries does not always imply being at the top, one needs to evolve as the industry does. One of my proudest accomplishments was being able to script for an automation programme. I started Setel with a minimal understanding of automation and am now able to write them.”

If your interests fall in the realm of computer science, there’s never been a better time to pursue a degree in the field.
