Meet Mehrin Sultana Orthi

12 June 2017

An open book kind of person who loves to learn from her travels, Mehrin Sultana Orthi came to Malaysia from Bangladesh to pursue her Bachelor Degree in International Business.

She began her studies at Limkokwing University by pursing Foundation in Business. During her studies, she sharpened her communication skills and gained business expertise.

Building her own Brand

After Mehrin completed her foundation studies, she began focusing on fashion retail while studying for her Degree in International Business.

“I wanted to run my own boutique company,” she said while explaining that the University gave her the opportunity to learn about the industry in greater detail.

Mehrin hopes to be able to develop her own brand while engaging in her other passion. She models part-time to help her understand her future clients.

“Limkokwing is one of the universities that is creative, and they have this course which allows me to run a business while learning more about the industry.”

“As soon as I graduate, I would like to start my own business,” she added.

Path to Self-Discovery

As a part of her class project, Mehrin was involved in various fashion showcases and exhibitions.

“I had to design dresses on a mannequin which were showcased at the Limkokwing Branding Gallery,” she said while adding that her main goal was to emulate other well-known brands such as Dior.

“They gave me this opportunity to showcase my talent,” she also added.

For Mehrin, Limkokwing University’s industry focused educational approach enabled her to be more aware of the industry and prepare herself for the real world.

“We learned how to run a fashion company,” she added. “It gives me ideas on how to run my own business.”

According to Mehrin, the experience has helped her gain more confidence in herself.

“I have gained some useful retail skills that I could use,” she said. “More importantly, it gave me the chance to find out more about myself.”

Bridging Communities

Mehrin’s greatest achievement at the University was being able to connect various communities as a student ambassador.

“Being a student ambassador meant that I would have to represent my community and represent Limkokwing as a Bangladeshi,” she said. “When the University wants to organise an event, I am the one who helps lead the community.”

Mehrin explained that she was mainly responsible for drafting student-related activities with her community and submitting the proposals to the University. These activities include Bangladesh’s Independence Day, National Language Day and other cultural activities.

“I help to conduct community gatherings with students from other countries,” she added. “We get to introduce others to our culture.”

Never Left Out

“I have a lot of Bangladeshi classmates and lecturers to help me,” she said while adding that her lecturers are always there, and they always tend to her questions.

According to her, her home country does not have the same opportunities for multicultural exposure.

“This was a learning opportunity that I did not manage to get back in my home country,” she said. “The lecturers are not only from Malaysia but from various other countries as well.”

“I felt a bit more at home, because I have lecturers from my own country,” she added.

Mehrin explained that the presence of her countrymen and women made communication much easier for her.

“I never felt left out.”
