Creative Multimedia student Liew Pooi Khey won the Lion-Parkson Calligraphy Competition with ‘Distinction’ under the University/College Students Category.

The competition was organised by the Lion-Parkson Foundation (LPF) together with Tsinghua University from Beijing, China and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) to promote Chinese art and culture and calligraphy in Malaysia.

The final selection of the winning pieces for the Lion-Parkson Tsinghua Calligraphy Competition 2016 was carried out at the Calligraphy Cultural and Learning Centre in Tsinghua University in Beijing on 9 March.

“I joined the Calligraphy competition January this year, because the skills I gained in Limkokwing University boosted my confidence to explore opportunities out there,” said Liew Pooi Khey.

The judging was done by four famous calligraphers and scholars in China, namely: Professor Liu Tao, China Central Academy of Arts; Professor Liu Shi, School of Humanities, Tsinghua University; Professor Du Peng Fei, Deputy Executive Director of Arts Museum, Tsinghua University; and Dr Luo San Gui, China Guang Ming Daily Deputy Director of Photography and Art Department, Senior Editor and Calligrapher.

On how she feels about winning the competition she said, “I was quite surprised and excited because there are different types of calligraphy but for this competition I used a new style I hadn’t tried before and it was quite a challenge for me.”

Liew Pooi Khey explains that she is grateful to have joined Limkokwing University because she would not have had the opportunity to explore her multimedia skills otherwise.

“I studied Science at my high school, but after a while I realised that I’m more of an artsy person. I felt Limkokwing was the best fit for me to transition to Multimedia and I enrolled in 2014.”

The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Multimedia semester 5 student acknowledged that the multicultural environment on campus stimulates her creativity as she networks with students from around the world.

Limkokwing University encourages students to take part in competitions, events, fashion shows, performing arts, sports and fund-raising campaigns The experience gained gives students the ability to compete and apply what they learn in the classroom to real life challenges.
