Limkokwing alumnus Daniel Ngoo is bringing his designs to Australia this month for the first time, at the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival. The label’s spring/summer 2017 collection reflect his distinctive style.

Ngoo shot to one-to-watch status in 2011 when he won the Star Creation and Audi Young Designer titles. Having just graduated from Malaysia’s Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, he took out the awards with a capsule collection he described as “grunge-feminine”.

His prize-winning student collection used a range of fabrics and cuts from men’s fashion. It was an early sign as to the direction in which his look would evolve.

The accolades landed him a role with Singaporean fashion label Raoul, where he stayed for 18 months before moving on to a couture bridal house, Le Grand Weddings, where he learnt valuable skills. “It was a really good experience because in a bridal house you learn a lot of really delicate techniques,” he says. “It was a time I was able to brush up on how to be more delicate, how to be more feminine.”

The young Malaysian is the creative director of Whole9Yards, a Singapore-based label with its sights on the world.
