On Sunday, 24 September 2023, the Hall of Fame at Limkokwing University buzzed excitedly as 108 budding models from the Limkokwing International Lifestyle Design Academy eagerly lined up to graduate from the Professional Modeling 1.0 (Beginner) course. Today marked not only the graduation ceremony of these modelling students but also a celebration of the collaboration between the Academy, Malaysia International Digital Fashion Week (MIDFW), and CIMB, marking a significant milestone in these young models' journeys toward the glamorous world of fashion.

The ceremony unfolded with a showcase that was nothing short of spectacular. It was a confluence of dreams, determination, and the dazzling array of skills honed over months of rigorous training. Each stride on the runway was a testament to the perseverance and growth of the individuals who had embarked on this journey, with dreams twinkling in their eyes and apprehension nestling in their hearts.

Aliyahana Shalini, a charismatic model and organiser of Curve Fashion Week, reflected on her journey, “It’s not just about mastering the catwalk; it’s about shattering personal barriers and emerging with a newfound confidence that extends beyond the runway.” The challenge of weight management she faced during the course sculpted her into a determined individual who now embraces opportunities with a refined focus and a relentless spirit.

The narrative echoed through the experiences shared by Farrah Zenny Salihuddin, an International Plus Size Model and Technical Programme Manager. For her, this course was a platform that transcended traditional modelling paradigms. “It nurtured a community that uplifted each other, emphasising the importance of humility, kindness, and continual learning,” she said warmly. The course also addressed significant issues like sexual harassment, providing the models with the knowledge and courage to navigate such challenges within and outside the fashion industry.

Nikkhil, a theatre performer, offered a contrasting perspective. His struggle to align his theatrical instincts with the requirements of a male model showcased the course’s ability to provide a versatile learning platform. “It was about adapting, evolving, and mastering the subtle art of blending personality with professionalism on the runway,” he recounted.

At the core of the programme’s success, Rana Mohamad Mahmoud Abouzied, the founder of Alnefre Cosmetics, and Riithra Vee, a psychologist, highlighted the holistic approach adopted by the programme. “It addresses the mental, emotional, and psychological aspects crucial for thriving in the high-pressure modelling world,” Riithra noted. The course was not just a gateway to modelling but a conduit for personal growth, self-reflection, and developing a resilient mindset capable of overcoming the relentless waves of rejection and criticism inherent in the industry.

Ismail Ani Arope from CIMB elucidated that the endeavour extended beyond individual accomplishments. “It’s about cultivating a vibrant creative economy, empowering the models as content creators for CIMB’s Artober Art & Soul campaign, and fostering a thriving marketplace for local artists, designers, galleries, and artisans,” he expressed.

Anuar Faizal, the visionary owner of Malaysia International Digital Fashion Week (MIDFW), was among the distinguished instructors who witnessed the blossoming of young talents. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of fashion icons was palpable. He took a moment to share his insights into the transformative journey the models had undergone, “Partnering with Limkokwing has been a blessing from the very start until now, and we have seen nothing but progress. We are happy to create a module that is sustainable but creative,
artisanal yet high-tech.”

Anuar’s words testify to the remarkable outcomes possible when creativity meets opportunity. These young models are doing much more than just walking down a runway; they are stepping into a larger world with a refined sense of purpose and a solid foundation to build upon. The future looks bright for them in the fashion industry, and it’s inspiring to observe how this programme has equipped them with a harmonious blend of skills, confidence, and a sense of community—all crucial elements in this field.

The narratives spun by the graduates, and the organisers vividly depicted an enriching journey. From tentative first steps to confident strides on the runway, from battling personal insecurities to embracing a community that thrives on mutual support and continual learning, the Professional Modeling 1.0 (Beginner) course curated by Limkokwing International Lifestyle Design Academy, in collaboration with MIDFW and CIMB, was more than just a course. It was a crucible of transformation, nurturing individuals who are not just models but empowered beings ready to carve their niche in fashion and beyond.
