Thirty one students from the Faculty of Multimedia Creativity attended an industry talk at Streamline Studios on 26 October at Bangsar South, in Kuala Lumpur.

Streamline Studios is a game developer and a leader in premium external development services for the video game industry. The studio provides premium art sourcing services to international clients. These include character creation, game world design and animation production.

The studio has partnered with various brands including Capcom, Square Enix, Disney and Sony Online. It has several international office branches in Malaysia, Japan, Europe and the United States.

During the talk, students were given the chance to gain industry tips from the studio’s experienced professionals.

“Being proactive, exploring, researching and keeping a positive learning attitude can go a long way,” advised John Flannery, Streamline Studios technical producer.

He explained that ‘factoids’ such as little bits of knowledge can help a designer to greatly improve their designs and artwork.

“Learn from the outside world,” he said. “Experience is always new and having a wide range of knowledge can allow you to create new things.”

He also emphasised the importance of having an open mind when communicating new ideas. The designers must be able to conceptualise their ideas and have the ability to prototype them quickly.

“This visit benefits students by giving us the chance to see how the industry works,” said Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Games Technology student Tan Wei Yang.

“I learned a lot from this experience,” he added. “We learned to organise project workflows, develop artwork design and learn programming techniques from experienced professionals.”

This exposure gives students the chance to gain insights on the game industry.

“I believe it is great for my future, because they showed us how to prepare our portfolios and talked about the skills graduates need in the game industry,” said Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Games Art Development student Brilliane Feldo Widjaja while adding that it enables him to focus on those skills.

“It also gave me the chance to follow industry standards and recruitment requirements after I complete my studies.”

Limkokwing University collaborates with various studios and companies to provide students with industry exposure. This gives graduates the opportunity to gain experience from industry professionals and establish networking contacts.
